This is for a laptop that I haven't used for a while, so I am not sure what caused the problem in the first place. Symptom however is that running windows update returns error 80070002.

I followed the advice there https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/910336/windows-update-error-0x80070002-or-0x80070003
Then seeing the content of checkSUR.log I uninstalled avg and followed the advice in this thread, but the installation of visual c++ failed: Windows 7 Playing up - Checksur.log entries relating to AVG | AVG

I then ended up on this forum and followed the instructions. My CBS file is here: CBS.zip - Google Drive
And here is the result of SFCFix:

SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2017-11-16 21:25:36.401
Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - amd64
Not using a script file.

Re: [W7SP1 x64] no more updates. Something caused by avg?

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. Are you still in need of assistance?

Re: [W7SP1 x64] no more updates. Something caused by avg?

OK, please start with the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Re: [W7SP1 x64] no more updates. Something caused by avg?

Please do the following.

Step#1 - Export SideBySide

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide
  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file SxS (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Once done please upload this file via Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace.

Re: [W7SP1 x64] no more updates. Something caused by avg?

Please do the following. Then reboot and try updates.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Re: [W7SP1 x64] no more updates. Something caused by avg?

Please do the following again.

Then also do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.
