Over the last week I've been trying tosolve issues regarding inability to install windows updates.

I've been able to resolve many issuesidentified by CheckSUR.log myself by putting non corrupt .manifest, mum, and .cat files in %windir%\Temp\CheckSUR\manifests and%windir%\Temp\CheckSUR\Packages respectively and running SURT.

The only update I cannot take at thecurrent time is 2018-02 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7for x64-based Systems (KB4074598)

After running SFC, SURT and SFCFIX Iget the below and I've hit a brick wall on how to fix.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Windows 7 SP1 x64 Can't Install KB4074598

Hello and welcome to Sysnative!

Remove Update Manually
1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:3123862

4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

Re: Windows 7 SP1 x64 Can't Install KB4074598

Thanks for both the welcome and getting back to me! I tried this and receive the following error: "Installer encountered an error: 0x80070490 Element not found" Any thoughts on what else I can try?

Search with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)

  • Download FRST64 and save it to the Desktop.
  • Open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • Type or copy/paste the following command:

Code:
 dism /online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:TFTP|find "completed"

  • Wait for the command to finish with "The operation completed successfully" If it does not show, please continue with the steps nonetheless.
  • Close the window "Administrator: Command Prompt"
  • Execute FRST/FRST64 right click on the icon
    FRST.jpg
and choose Run as Administrator. Make sure all other windows are closed.
(When the tool opens for the first time, you must click Yes on the disclaimer.)
    FRST_SearchRegistry.png
  • On the Search box (1) type or copy and paste the following text:
    KB3123862
  • Press the Search Registry button.
  • Wait for the search to finish FRST will produce a log called (SearchReg.txt) in the same directory the Tool is run from.
  • Please attach the log to your post.

Re: Windows 7 SP1 x64 Can't Install KB4074598

Thanks for the advice. I followed your instructions:

I ran the command dism /online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:TFTP|find "completed" however did not get the message"The operation completed successfully". There was no error, just a new line to type in another command.

Ran FRST64 as you instructed and have attached the SearchReg.txt file.

Please let me know your thoughts and if there is anything else I can provide.

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Sorry about the delay! I didn't get the notification of your latest reply.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload toa file sharing service and just provide the link here.

Re: Windows 7 SP1 x64 Can't Install KB4074598

Need more info:

Step#1 - Retrieve Software Hive
Note: The Software hive has confidential and sensitive information in it so please send me a PM with a link to the hive so it's not in the public form.

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named SOFTWARE.
  • Copy this file to your Desktop.
  • Now right click on this file on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file(s) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just PM me your link.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

Re: Windows 7 SP1 x64 Can't Install KB4074598

Sent PM with the requested details.

Sorry for the delay! Malware somehow got installed on this machine after my last PM and I wanted to get that removed before I continued with troubleshooting.

Attached is latest CheckSUR.log. To my novice eye the remaining errors all seem to reference my Avast antivirus. Still cannot install the update listed in title.

If you still need me to PM you the software hive info let me know.
