I think I may have originally posted in the wrong area. I'm going to try this one again:

Hi all. New to the forum and I'm really hoping to find my answer here! After having looked at many similar posts, I think I may need some customized help if someone out there is willing to provide it.

I have inherited my husband's computer recently and have been catching up on all of the updates he has neglected to install. I have not been able to install SP1 on this computer. Currently running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Attempts to install SP1 has resulted in the cursed "invalid parameter 0x80070057" error code after the install fails.

I have attempted the following so far (not necessarily in this order):
Microsoft's help site: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...ate-components, which resulted in several .dll s not cooperating. See Dropbox - regsvr32.docx for my results. Not sure if this is the root of the problem and I don't know how to go about fixing these issues. All Google searches do not give me much confidence in fixing .dlls on my own. No attempts to fix these errors directly have been made.

Attempted to install under a clean boot. No good. same invalid parameter 0x80070057 installation failure.

Ran sfc /scannow with NO ERRORS FOUND :)

Ran System Update Readiness Tool and found the following: Dropbox - SP1 fix (this is my checkSUR log).

Since the checkSUR log items seem to be associated with Avast, I have tried the Avast repair tool within the program - the SUR errors remained. Completely uninstalling it and running SUR - the SUR errors remained. I have since reinstalled Avast and am currently running their free version.

I have scanned for viruses and Malware, all clean.

I have run CCleaner and fixed all found registry errors.

I have run SFCfix.exe and here is the SFCfix.txt log Dropbox - SFCFix.txt

Thanks very much!

Re: Problems updating to SP1 - Windows 7 Professional

Hello and welcome! Please try installing SP1 again and attach CBS.log after it fails.

Thank you.

Re: Problems updating to SP1 - Windows 7 Professional

Please completely remove Avast from the computer and attempt to install SP1 again.
If any printers are installed, please temporarily uninsatll them.

Any VMs on the machine?

Did you physically detach the printer(s) from the machine?

Nope. No VMs. Printer is wireless and the only thing plugged into the machine is a usb receiver for my wireless mouse.

Re: Problems updating to SP1 - Windows 7 Professional

Have you tried the offline setup?
Have you tried installing it from Clean Boot?

Yes, both. I have been doing the offline install after I removed my antivirus with no luck.

And yes, tried clean boot install as well. Nothing. ☹️

Re: Problems updating to SP1 - Windows 7 Professional

Step#1 - FRST Scan
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please copy and paste log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Hello! Sorry for my delayed response. I have been a little under the weather the last few days. I ran the above scan tool. Here are my txt files:

Addition.txt: Dropbox - Addition.txt
FRST.txt: Dropbox - FRST.txt

You will see in these logs that I reinstalled Avast. I still need to use this computer for work and needed to ensure I had an antivirus running. I am happy to delete it again if necessary while performing these fixes or attempting to install SP1 again.

Thanks!

Re: Problems updating to SP1 - Windows 7 Professional

Double click the Unknown device and get me its Hardware ID.

I'm sorry for such a delayed response. I never received a notification that you responded to my last post.

I tried to find the Hardware ID for this device, but there isn't one. Here is a screenshot of the device manager item: Dropbox - Unknown Device Hardware ID.docx

That seems odd....

Indeed. What happens if you try to update the device driver?

When I try to update the device driver it returns the message: "Windows could not find driver software for your device". And since I don't know what the driver is, I can't manually search for the driver and install it.

Should I uninstall it?
