[7 x64] Stuck at Startup; then stuck at chkdsk: volume clean. FIX: REMOVED AVG & MSE.

Computer was working fine last night, logged off, but left computer on. This morning, moving the mouse and realized the computer was off (no one touched it, probably Windows Updates and might be power outage)

Turning on computer and it got stuck at Starting Windows... screen.

I could reboot Windows in safe mode, I tried uninstalled 4 updates ((1 Windows security update, 1 Windows update? 2 .Net framework update)) that were installed overnight, but only the top two got removed, the other two could not be uninstalled...

I tried pressing F8, then startup repair; startup repair from Windows ISO USB, they failed... I tried "bootrec /fixmbr", "bootrec /fixboot", "bootrec /scanos", "bootrec /rebuildbcd", did not help.

somehow it could no longer boot into safe mode... (stuck at loading drivers (text scrolling up) screen)

i then tried chkdsk /f /r, it prompted to schedule chkdsk at bootup. After reboot, chkdsk ran, finished 5 stages, then reboots itself, then it display:
Checking file system on C:
the type of the file system is NTFS.
the volume is clean.

And got stuck there.

Rebooting the computer and it will go through the same process: Starting Windows... chkdsk, reboot, stuck.

Please help!

Any suggestion how to fix these please?

Re: Windows 7 x64 stuck at Starting Windows... (then stuck at chkdsk: the volume is c

When chkdsk initiates, it gives option to press a key to cancel. I tried that, and it displays:
Checking file system on C:
the type of the file system is NTFS.

A disk check has been schedule.
Disk checking has been cancelled.

And the screen stuck there...

Re: Windows 7 x64 stuck at Starting Windows... (then stuck at chkdsk: the volume is c

I am having the same issue as sunnybreezygarlic. Has anyone come up with a fix for this besides re-installing?

Hi sunnybreezygarlic,

What are your system specs?

Re: [W7 x64] Stuck at Startup... Then stuck at chkdsk: the volume is clean.

It's fixed! Hallelujah! Thank God!

- finally, registry backups: What Happens if You Delete the Entire Windows Registry?

This was fixed by booting up the laptop with Windows Rescue Disk (or if you can, tab F8, then select Repair Computer, or use Windows ISO USB to boot up), go to Command Prompt, then copy the registry backup files over the current ones. (In my case, the backup files were created 7 days ago, a working versions! If you find size 0 files, do not use them.)

Instructions: hard drive - Windows 10 is messed up (bad_system_config) - Super User

Later, when I searched "RegBack", a lot of articles came up, including one from Sysnative here: Manually Restore the Registry From its Backup in Windows (Windows 7 / Vista)

I feel relieved. It's a two days journey for me. Hope the info is helpful.

Re: [W7 x64] Stuck at Startup... Then stuck at chkdsk: the volume is clean.

... problem not resolved yet, after restarting computer, it's still stuck at "Starting Windows". well, at least now I can boot in Safe Mode and (after replacing Registry files) normal mode once... will continue to troubleshoot... any suggestion is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: [W7 x64] Stuck at Startup... Then stuck at chkdsk: the volume is clean.

Have you tried sfc /scannow?

Re: [W7 x64] Stuck at Startup... Then stuck at chkdsk: the volume is clean.

I tried, but it gives this message:
Code:
There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."

and after rebooting, computer stuck at "Starting Windows".

Re: [W7 x64] Stuck at Startup... Then stuck at chkdsk: the volume is clean.

Can you check if this file is present:
Code:
C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml

If it is, please delete the file and try booting normally.

Re: [W7 x64] Stuck at Startup

Yes, there is one there with size about 12 MB. I deleted it and restarted the laptop in safe mode (with logging enabled), it shows "Please wait..." for about 10 minutes, then shows "Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to log in". I checked the ntbtlog.txt file, seeing a lot of drivers (no specific paths...) no loaded, but could not make out what they are about, please see attached View attachment ntbtlog.txt, any ideas?

I am restarting now in Diagnostic Startup Mode (assuming it will take a while and Normal Mode will take much longer). It's showing "Starting Windows" now, but I'll wait this time... (yes, logging was enabled).

Re: [W7 x64] Stuck at Startup... Then stuck at chkdsk: the volume is clean.

Go to CMD and enter the following:

Code:
[B]dism.exe /image:[COLOR=#339966]c:[/COLOR]\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions[/B]

Let me know if the command was successful and try booting again.

Note: If your system isn't on drive C:, please modify that accordingly.

Re: [W7 x64] Stuck at Startup... Then stuck at chkdsk: the volume is clean.

hard rebooted computer at 9:32 PM (started at ~9:00 PM).

booted into Safe mode with networking (this time after scrolling text of drivers, it displayed, "Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to log in" directly, no "Please wait")

open CMD (Run as Administrator)

entered the command, it showed:

Code:
Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.1.7600.16385

Error: 87

The /Image option that is specified points to a running Windows installation. To service the running operating system, use the /Online option. For more information, refer to the help by running DISM.exe /Online /?.

the DISM log file can be found at C:\windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Re: [W7 x64] Stuck at Startup... Then stuck at chkdsk: the volume is clean.

It showed this:

Image Version: 6.1.7601.18489

Error: 87

The cleanup-image option is unknown.

Re: [W7 x64] Stuck at Startup... Then stuck at chkdsk: the volume is clean.

sorry, that dism log (already removed) was from previous command, i replaced the post with the result of the second command you provided.

Re: [W7 x64] Stuck at Startup... Then stuck at chkdsk: the volume is clean.

restarted Windows... after ~30 seconds, it got past "Starting Windows", showing "Configuring Windows ...", then "Failure configuring Windows"... now "Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to log on"!
