Hello everyone! This is my second time at this site, and you guys helped me so much the first time, that I wanted to fix my other computer here as well :). I haven't been able to update my Windows 7 computer in awhile now. For some reason it doesn't want to update to SP1. I remember reading something awhile back, but I couldn't get it to work for the life of me. I'm hoping it won't be a long fix, but as was the case with my first computer, I am prepared for that hehe. I went through the necessary steps to ensure that my logs are current, and I tried to attach my logs to this post, but they were too large. So they are located here instead: Download CBS.zip from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

Thank you so much! - Joe

I apologize for taking ages to respond, but I downloaded the installer and I got an error that says. Installer encountered an error: 0x80070424. The specified services does not exist as an installed service.

Farbar Service Scanner
1. Download Farbar Service Scanner from here, and move it to the Desktop
2. Right-click on FSS.exe > Run as Administrator
3. Checkmark everything, and click Scan

4. Once it finishes, Notepad will open FSS.txt on your Desktop. Copy and paste everything in it in your next reply

Thanks again for your help! Here are the results of the FSS scan:

Should I try installing the service pack with Windows Updates again, or what should the next steps be?

Oh nope, it says that it installed I just wanted to double-check. I remember back when I was trying to update it before, there seemed to be many more updates for it to install. The automated tool just finished a lot faster than I was anticipating. When I go to the Windows Update screen now, it says that I can't, because the service isn't running. I tried going to services.msc and stopping/starting the service, but that didn't seem to work? Hmmm.

Let's clarify things a bit:
1. You have not installed SP1 successfully.
2. Windows Update reports an error when trying to check for updates.
3. Which automated tool are you referring to? FSS?

Check for updates again, and when it returns the error, attach CBS.log and WindowsUpdate.log

I will have to get back to you, I am about to be going on vacation. Thank you again for your assistance!

Hello, I'm back from vacation and attempted with the offline SP1 installer, and this is the error message I get: "Installation was not successful. The referenced assembly could not be found. Error: ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING(0x80073701)

Unfortunately, from the looks of it, there are corruptions which would be very time consuming to fix, and therefore, I am going to recommend a repair install as the fastest route.
