Any help would be appreciated

Just a quick update! Forgot to say I've already tried Windows Update Troubleshooter and it reports its found and fixed errors but the updates still fail to install and when I run Windows Update Troubleshooter again it says its found the same errors and fixed them again so I'm not so sure its actually fixing anything. Attached is a screenshot of WUT results.

Also found 2 more failed updates in the hidden updates section so thought best I add them to the list above:

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3139398)
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 800F0826

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3110329)
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80070005

I've also seen that error code 800F0826 (most of the failed updates above) seems to mean updates failed because of a previous update failure so I'm guessing that the other errors are the ones to concentrate on as resolving those might also resolve the *00F0826's. So looking at the others, they are both 80070005 which from a quick google returns an access error:

"Error code 0x80070005 is also known as "ACCESS DENIED." It usually occurs when you lack file or registry permissions that are required to install the update."

I've check file and reg permissions and the current user has administrator privileges full to the HD and Full to the registry so I'm now totally stumped :)

Oh and I've scanned and confirmed clean from malware using MSE and Malwarebytes.

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named Bruce1270. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hi Synapse

Apologies for the delay.

I need to see the c:\windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log file

Please browse to this file and attach in your next post.

If the file is too big you can use Dropbox or sendspace with a link.

Thanks

Hi Synapse

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put tags around the log to break up the text.

Hi bruce1270

Thank you for your reply.

The script processed and gave the following output however the command prompt first gave an error:

Failed to check for updates. This may be due to an internet connection problem
or a temporary availability failure of the update servers. Please ensure you
using the latest version of the program before continuing or exit now . . .

There is no connection problem and I downloaded the latest version of SFCFix.exe so not sure why I got that error but the

Hi Synapse

Please attempt to install only ONE of the outstanding updates that need installed. If the install fails please provide the following:

1. The KB you attempted to install
2. CBS log
3. setupapi.dev.log

Thanks bruce1270

Attempted to install KB3110329 which initially said install succeeded (while in windows before the restart) but when restarting gave the failed & reverting message.

While trying to zip the cbs.log file for you winzip reported it couldn't create the zip on a read only drive which led me to check some permissions and I discovered nearly all files/directories (inc user/appdata/temp) were somehow marked read only and it wouldnt allow me to change them even as admin. I also found stacks of wu related temp stuff which was also read only. After taking ownership of all the affected areas I was able to remove read only attrib and clean out the temp stuff and subsequently installing all the updates succeeded. I have no clue when/how all the permissions got screwed up but it looks like this might have been the main problem all along.

Thanks for your assistance and sorry for wasting your time. Hopefully something here will match with your existing data on this case and will point to read only temp files/directories contributing to the failures?

Thanks again for your help.

As per my PM here's the required files after the system restore.
