If there were an Olympics competition in innovation, you might expect the U.S. to get the gold medal.

Guess again. It wouldn't even win the silver.

Bloomberg Rankings recently examined 215 countries and sovereign regions to determine their innovation quotient. The final universe was narrowed to 110. What follows is the top 30.

Innovation was measured by seven factors, including R&D intensity, productivity, high-tech density, researcher concentration, manufacturing capability, tertiary efficiency and patent activity. The methodology, definitions and weightings are explained in the last slide.
