Hi All

Firstly, my apologies in advance (again) for being a technical innocent. I am very much a user and do not have great IT technical skills.

You recently solved this problem for my refurbished laptop. I have now discovered the same problem on my wife's laptop and I am hoping you can help me with this also. Her problem appears to be the same as mine was but I noted you have said not to try the solutions on different computers so I am addressing hers separately.

I am trying to get up to speed with the Windows updates but have got stuck with two of them, which fail to install repeatedly.

These updates are:

(a) 2018-06 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4284826)

Download size: 222.6 MB

and

(b) 2018-06 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4284842)

Download size: 228.1 MB
______________

Both of these have failed repeatedly with the following message:

"Error(s) found: Code 8024200D Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I have tried to install them separately. I have checked for internet stability (no problem). I have followed all of the instructions on the sysnative.com windows update page.

Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions

No matter what I try, the updates fail with the same error code.

I have cleared the CBS files and then tried to run the updates again. I have copied the CBS files as requested when I had my problem. (Link follows)

In an effort to try and be efficient I have also downloaded SFCFix and SFCFixScript.txt and run them. This produced the following message:

Can you work your magic on my wife's laptop they way you did on mine??

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Kindest Regards

One portion of magic comin' right up!

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be Windows6.1-KB4103718-x64.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB4103718-x64.cab\Windows6.1-KB4103718-x64.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.

Go ahead and do so if prompted. Let me know what errors if any come up. If you do get errors, please zip/attach your CBS.log

Hey softwaremaniac

Thanks for the magic potion. It has certainly solved at least part of the problem.

I followed the instructions and then tried to run the two security updates that had been failing. The optional update worked:
_______________
2018-06 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4284842)

Installation date: ‎01/‎07/‎2018 11:43

Installation status: Successful

Update type: Optional
______________________________

but the 'important' update *may* have failed.

Here is the update history record for that.
____________2018-06 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4284826)

Installation date: ‎01/‎07/‎2018 11:41

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 80242016

Update type: Important
___________________

The weird thing is, when I check for updates Windows tells me that the updates are up to date and there are no new updates. N.B. The 'important update that failed (KB4284826) has disappeared. It does not show as 'failed' on the windows update screen. In fact it does not show up at all! I just get the green message saying that there are no updates and my Windows is up to date.

As I have a history entry telling me this update failed when last run 30 mins ago, I am not sure what to believe. lol.

As requested, the CBS log is here:

Dropbox - CBS.zip

Looking forward to your feedback.

As always, thanks for your help.

Kindest Regards

Tig

The optional update should not have been installed as it is essentially beta software. Can you try manually downloading and installing KB4284826?

Sorry if I am being dim. I have gone to the microsoft update catalogue and selected download. I only get an app called pciclearstalecache.

When I select this link, I get a box asking me to hit run. When I do that, there is a 'flash' on the screen (in the shape of a box outline) and then nothing happens. (no message of any description to send you sorry).

Checking windows updates on my laptop it is still showing as up to date with no new updates, (i.e. no KB4284826).

Have I done something wrong?

Kindest Regards

Tig

Hey Softwaremaniac

I tried to run it and got a pop up saying "The update is not applicable to your computer"

It is likely that the Preview you have installed did this. I'd recommend you wait and see whether the July update will install when it is released :)

Thanks for this Softwaremaniac

I shall hang on for July's update and see how it goes! (BTW... any idea when that will come out).

If I have any problems I will, of course, be back on here looking for more of your magic potions :-)

In the meanwhile, Thank You (again) for all your help! I really am grateful.

Have a good Sunday.

Tig
