2012 essentials checking for update forever

Hi, I have a server 2012 essentials box that sits at "checking for updates" forever. it doesn't fail or find updates. I've let it sit for days. Hoping to get some guidance on resolving the issue.

Things I have tried:
Reset WU components
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
uninstalling recent updated w
Microsoft Windows update troubleshooter
lots and lots of reboots
Disabled AV/firewall

Hi!

This is a known issue due to Desktop Experience. You will have to uninstall it in order for updates to work again.
