Hello esteemed computer fixers, first post here about a long-time problem with my home assembled computer. I never get a BSOD, rather the machine suddenly shuts down, then attempts a re-boot. I say attempts because, for some reason, the ASUS BIOS keeps changing and it changes the boot order, to boot on my F: drive, instead of C: I have installed the latest BIOS and change the settings and seems to boot properly, but after a while it starts trying to boot on F:. I have kind of given up correcting the BIOS. Someone suggested I install an new CMOS battery, but that didn't make any difference.

The sudden shutdown seems to happen most often when the computer is idle, once or twice a day, but occasionally when I am using it. I also sometimes get a total machine freeze, where I can see both screens, but nothing works. No mouse or keyboard response. The only way out is to remove power from the machine and restart. This happens a few times a week.

About 6 months ago I reinstalled windows 10 and it was better for a while, but after a month or so I started getting the crashes again. At first, the machine properly rebooted on it's own after the crash, but after a while the BIOS changed to the F: drive and it won't restart unless I F2 to open BIOS, then I take it from there.

When I go into Windows Event Viewer, it says I am getting kernel power 41 errors. A few months back I tried swapping power supplies with an older computer but that didn't make any difference, so I put the Corsair back in.

I am attaching my SysnativeFileCollectionApp.zip, my Speccy machine information file, and have started running the driver verifier. I hope someone can point me towards a resolution.

Thanks.

Thanks for responding to my plea.

Okay, I ran Memtest86 for almost 24 hours and 12 passes and 0 errors showed up. Screen photo attached.

What's next?

The APU temps is a bit high. Could you try with a better cooling solution? When was the last time you cleaned the machine of dust?

Re: Machine just crashes, no BSOD. Sometimes it freezes up.

As I mentioned, this crashing has been going on for quite a while. The chassis is pretty clean, and last year I added a second chassis fan to help with cooling. I can try re-applying head sink material to the CPU and see how that looks.

Is there any more diagnostics I can try to try and capture the root cause?

Thanks.

Re: Machine just crashes, no BSOD. Sometimes it freezes up.

I ran SSDLife and it came back as healthy, but it was unable to capture any other detail of the SSD.

So far, I am unable to run SeaTools. When I attempt to run it, it is unable to locate my drives. I noticed it loads from the CD to the C:/ drive, which is my SSD. No mention in the installation of my HDD, which is my F:/ drive.

Re: Machine just crashes, no BSOD. Sometimes it freezes up.

I ran SeaTools for windows. Long test for both the SSD & HDD. Both passed 100%. I also applied new thermal past to the APD and heat sink, and rearranged a few cables to make sure that air had a clean shot to the APU heatsink. My origional 80mm chassis fan is a little noisy, so I ordered a 90mm replacement, should be here in a few days.

Re: Machine just crashes, no BSOD. Sometimes it freezes up.

Good question. I built this machine about two and a half years ago, but I apparently used a power supply I purchased seven years ago and was using in a different machine. It's a Corsair CX400W Power Supply - 400-Watt, 120mm Fan, SATA-Ready, 80Plus, ATX.

Maybe it's time for a new one.

Re: Machine just crashes, no BSOD. Sometimes it freezes up.

I would suggest borrowing one that you know is good and testing with it, just to be thorough. Are there any errors in the Event Viewer?

Re: Machine just crashes, no BSOD. Sometimes it freezes up.

I have ordered a new power supply and it will be here is a couple of days. Last night, about 0200, it crashed again with a Kernel Power error 41.

I see around the same time there was an error regarding the failure to connect for the XPS printer drivers. I have no idea whey this might induce a crash, but I removed the XPS printer from the Control Panel, just in case.

Re: Machine just crashes, no BSOD. Sometimes it freezes up.

The new power supply has been installed. I will post results in a week or so if it fixed the problem. I'll post sooner if it didn't.

:banghead:

Rats. New power supply, one extra fan, still crashing. At this point I don't know what to do other than replacing the mother board. Maybe it's software. :banghead:

I see you have two RAM sticks. Please try removing one and using your computer with only one stick for a while to see if it happens again. If it does, do the same but with the other stick of RAM.
