I'm pretty sure this problem has been caused by the installation of Windows Update KB4054517 but it could possibly have been earlier as I very rarely if ever need too run DISM.

Winver and About Windows confirms Windows 10 Pro Version 1709 OS Build 16299.125 is installed on my system however when I view installed update history it states that KB4054517 failed to install on ‎12/‎12/‎2017 - 0x80070643.

sfc /scannow completes with Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. Have also tried Windows Update Troubleshooter which fixes some errors but doesn't fix the underlying problem of "Potential Windows update database error detected". Have also tried resetting the Windows Update database. Have also tried running DISM to check/scan/restore health but it fails immediately with Error 193 making it impossible to fix the underlying cause.

I would really appreciate some help in resolving this issue if possible as the last thing I want to do is fresh install.

Please see CBS.zip and SFCFix.txt attached.

Alright, can you run DISM again, and when it fails, attach new CBS.log

Have you successfully installed KB4054517 or are you unable to do so because of the error you mention?

Re: [Win10Pro x64] DISM Error 193 Possibly Caused By Windows Update KB4054517?

KB4054517 is installed as that is the update which updates the Windows version to Version 1709 OS Build 16299.125 however it's not listed in installed update history as successfully installed.

None listed possibly due to the database corruption.

I've been regularly checking for the latest emergency update KB4056892 (OS Build 16299.192) issued 3rd January but it's not appeared as yet.

Frankly, I would not be too concerned if everything seems to be working update wise :) Let'sm dig a bit deeper to see if there's anything that may help us.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run DISM just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log and dism.log

CBS2.zip and dism.log files attached below. Link to Logfile.zip is here Download Logfile.zip

While KB4054517 is not listed in installed update history as successfully installed it is present and available as an option to uninstall in Uninstall Updates although I've not tried to uninstall and reinstall it.

I should mention that I also tried to do a repair install with an in-place upgrade to fix the current problems but that also failed although I can't remember what the error message was.

From what I've read on previous posts successful fixes for the DISM error 193 involved taking ownership and re-registering the dll files in the downlevel folder?

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Afterwards, run DISM again, and report the result.

Re: [Win10Pro x64] DISM Error 193 Possibly Caused By Windows Update KB4054517?

As the SFCFix.txt contents are rather long I have attached it below for you to analyse.

As requested I then ran all 3 DISM variants: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth, Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth, Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and all 3 gave Error 193 as below:-

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.16299.125]

C:\WINDOWS\system32>Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool

One thing I have noticed (although I don't know whether it's significant or not) is that Windows is listed as Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.16299.125] whist the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool is listed as Version: 10.0.16299.15.

I'm not sure if they should both be the same version number or not for it to run properly?

I also found this thread which may be worth reading Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4054517 fails to install error - Microsoft Community

Yes, different numbers are indeed normal. Can you tell me the number of files within your downlevel folder now?

Folder properties says 96 files I have attached it below.
