[SOLVED] 0x900706be Error when trying to install KB5005463 and KB5015020

The problem started with the former KB in April, regularly giving the Error code in the title.
I thought the cumulative update in May would handle it, but it seems to fail, too.
I've tried SFC and DISM variants to no avail.
SFCFix doesn't appear to report anything, but the DISM fails within it.
EDIT:I just noticed the error is incorrect. It should be 0x800706be

Hello.

Welcome to Sysnative.
EPFGbk7.gif

I will be assisting you regarding your computer's issues. Since I'm still in training in Windows Update, my fixes have to be approved first by a qualified Update Expert, so there may be a slight delay in my replies. Look at it as a good thing though, since you will have two people looking at your problem. :-)

I am currently reviewing your logs, and will be back as soon as I am ready.

Thanks Dr M,

I can give you some more background in the meantime. This SSD drive is a clone of my original SSD which was pushing 10 years or so of service. The original SSD was a Win7 that was upgraded to Win10 around 2015. I cloned it around April 20th, and recall being able to do the KB5013624 (CU for NET Framework) update without issue (it was installed May 10th), but that KB5005463 update has been hanging around since mid-April and never installing. Now the CU for May KB50113942 doesn't install. I tried installing KB5015020 but that doesn't work, either.

I also recall seeing 'ntdll.dll' showing up in the event viewer, followed by 'msi.dll' as errors before failing the update efforts.

I also found my video-card rejected my attempt to upgrade it (although, I was able to seemingly downgrade it), and wonder if one of those DLLs might be related to the problem; however, I would prefer to get some input at this point before I go too far poking around and become forced to do a clean install.😄

Hi, Photonix.

Thank you for all the information given. It seems that this will take a while, since all the instructors are currently busy. Surely, we don't ignore you, and have this in mind before you "become forced to do a clean install". :-)

Thanks for your patience.

Hi, Photonix!

I hope you are still there. Thank you for your patience!

1. SFCFix

Please do the following to start with.

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.
  • Download the attached SFCFix.zip and save it on your Desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Attach that file to your next reply.

Hi, Photonix.

Try to update now and let me know the result. If the updates fail, please attach a new zipped CBS file for me to check.

It looks like the ERROR changed... I think that install attempt yesterday was on its own, as I don't remember doing it.
Nevertheless, it appears to still have issues.

Wait a minute...something odd has happened.

I looked at BitDefender, and it said there were 3 updates. It installed the NET Framework update (again?) then restarted.
I thought maybe something 'fixed' so tried the regular Windows Update (which failed, again), but now I see THIS in the Update History. So it 'successfully' installed the update on May 28th? That doesn't seem to make sense.
Regardless, I'll await your analysis, but this latest 'thing' may not be in the CBS logs I attached. As it stands, those other two updates are still hanging around 'needing' to be installed according to Windows.

Hi, Photonix.

You mentioned BitDefender in your previous post. Can you please give me some more details about what you mean by you looked there and found 3 updates?

Let's continue.

1. System File Checker
  • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter
Code:
sfc /scannow
  • Let the scan finish.
  • You will normally get one of the following results:
    Code:
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation
Please post the result you got (a screenshot).

2. DISM

When SFC finishes, you can then run the following from the same command prompt window, but full instructions as if starting fresh:

  • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
Code:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Let the scan run until the end (100%). Depending on your system, it can take some time.
  • Please post here the result you got (a screenshot).

2. CBS

Please attach a new zipped CBS file for me to check.

In your next reply please post:
  1. The two screenshots
  2. The CBS file

Dr M,

WRT Bitdefender, it has a 'helper' that will also check for updates allowing one to install them via their interface

So if I click on that it takes me to the following:
1654394842691.png
Hmmm curious... normally it would show that 'Windows Updates' are available. Strange how it said there were updates but doesn't show any.

Regardless, that's what I meant. So when I clicked on it prior it showed the two updates I can't seem to install, then also showed the NET FRAMEWORK update was also available (yet installed before).

Here's the combined SFC and DISM outputs:

That failing point in the DISM and Error:605 is consistent with what I've seen prior when trying to use it.

Hi, Photonix.

It would be better if you checked for updates directly from the Windows Settings instead from BitDefender.

Let's continue.

2. Run DISM

Run the DISM command again, as you did here, and let me see a screenshot of the result.

3. CBS log

Please attach a new zipped CBS file for me to check.

In your next reply please post:
  1. The SFCFix.txt
  2. The DISM screenshot
  3. The CBS file

Dr M,

I see progress as the DISM got past that 51.6% hurdle (perhaps from that msi.dll that SFCFix swapped?), but there is still some issue, it appears.
Nevertheless, I like the way it is going.:-)

Hi, Photonix.

Thanks for the update. Just letting you know that I'll be back to you as soon as I can, possibly tomorrow afternoon my time (it's 22:00 here now).

DR M,

I am not sure what happened, but I think it installed everything now.

1654489200657.png

If so, maybe it is fixed now? However, if you have another check for me to perform to verify it is 'working,' let me know.

Hi, Photonix!

Glad to here that the updates are working again!

Although it seems that the initial issue is resolved, I recommend you to go for a step forward, fixing at least one corrupted file and running a few more checks.

If you are fine with that, please proceed to the following:

2. DISM

Run the DISM command, as you did before, and attach a screenshot of the result.

3. SFC

If the DISM command completes without errors, run the SFC command, as you did here, and attach a screenshot of the result. Also, let me check a new CBS log.

In your next reply please post:
  1. The SFCFix.txt
  2. The 2 screenshots
  3. The CBS log

Dr M,

No worries, I am very grateful for everything you've already done.

It's looking good here. I still need to reset, but will attach the CBS now before I do so.
