Re: startpage changed, commercials on screen

While you consider the information I've provided below, in the meantime, I'll ask other members of the team if they see anything I've missed or have any additional suggestions.

Edit Note: Already a question from a staff member: Please explain whether you are referring to the computer being slow in general is slow or if it is only when browsing the internet. For example, is it slow opening other programs or opening screens like control panel or printers, etc?

How old is the computer? Has the dust been cleaned from it recently? That could be causing overheating and resulting in the computer shutting down. Although an old document, this was preserved from the retired Microsoft at Home website: Tidbits: How to clean your computer.

Also, you may want to run Speed SpeedFan to check the temperatures, etc.

SpeedFan is available from Download SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer and the current version is SpeedFan 4.51. Although the image below is for an older version, you will find the download link for 4.51 similarly as shown:

Install SpeedFan 4.510 and launch it from the desktop link. Do not make any changes to any of the settings. After you launch SpeedFan, leave your computer alone for a few minutes so that it is idle. You will see a screen like below. Either note down all the information in the second box (that has the temperatures) or save a screen copy and post a link to the image.

After a few minutes, go and do something on the computer. For example browse the Internet so that the CPU starts to work again. As you are doing this, keep an eye on the temperatures. Write down the temperatures while you are working on the computer. Please post both sets of information.

Also in SpeedFan, click the 'S.M.A.R.T' tab. Click the dropdown menu and select your main hard drive (C:). Hit the button that says 'Perform in-depth online analysis of this hard disk'. On the page that opens, look for something similar to this:

The overall fitness for this drive is 93%.
The overall performance for this drive is 93%.
If you decide to run SpeedFan, post the results for us to see.

laptop boots very slow en in general also slower then it before(laptop is normally faster).

    smart test:

HDDStatus - Tool to check hard disk status, health and reliability

Strange, the page that opens after the test is done, shows a lot of errors and 0% for each line, and the link pasted in here above, shows a good result. I'm confused.

see image for the page that opens after test is finished:

    speedfan test:
    idle tested on 11th-dec-2015 :
    HD0: 32
    temp1: 46
    corde0: 47
    corde1: 45

sytem working on 09th-dec-2015(several tabs openin browser, windows update was buzzy, updated java (new update message, so I started the update):
    HD0: 33
    temp1: 62
    corde0: 62
    corde1: 58

system working (11th-dec-2015): opened google chrome two tabs, the temperature goes for a sec or two higher to 52 but harddisk stays 32, then temperatur drops to 46, then I started rootscan of avg: arround 49-50 C hdd0 on 33. when 50 a flame icon appears.

Re: startpage changed, commercials on screen

Strange and no wonder you were confused. I have the feeling that the test didn't run correctly at first for some reason -- seeing as how the results went from 0% to 95% fitness. The temperature ranges are certainly acceptable.

Unless you've added programs to start with the computer, it shouldn't be booting slower than before. There are two ways of handling startup programs.

    1. One suggestion received is checking/disabling start-up apps using SysInternals AutoRuns -

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...rnals/bb963902

Click on "Logon" tab; un-check any unnecessary items.

    2. Another way to manage startup programs is with WinPatrol. The download link is below the horizontal line on this page: https://www.winpatrol.com/mydownloads/

See WinPatrol Features: Startup Programs, Start Up Programs: Remove, Add, Disable, and Reviewing Start-Up Programs.

If you are finding that browsing the Internet is slower, another suggestion received was to consider reinstalling Chrome.

    Re-install Chrome
    1. If you have bookmarks, let's save them by exporting them - Export Bookmarks
    2. Then I need you to go Google Sync and sign into your account
    3. Scroll down until you see the "Stop and Clear" button and click on the button. At the prompt click on "Ok"
    4. Now we need to uninstall chrome. Note: When asked about user data or settings you must remove this also so please check the box.
    5. Restart the computer and reinstall chrome, You can download The latest version from here - Google Chrome
    6. Import your bookmarks back into Chrome
    7. Sign back in to your Chrome browser so that your bookmarks sync with your online account.[/QUOTE]

Please let us know how you make out.

    ignore this message, an error

Re: startpage changed, commercials on screen

These are the startup items in logon tab (sysinternals) see image below:

Can I just disable all, and see if system work faster? or can it crash my system?

or can you tell me which is safe to disable?

avg is also in the list, isn't it better to disable avg from avg itself (permanently then reboot and see if still slow)?

Re: startpage changed, commercials on screen

The screen copy is rather a bit too small for me to see the name of the executables in order to see their purpose. For example, looking at a couple of the Asus entries:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\ATK Package\ATK Hotkey\HControlUser.exe -- is necessary at startup
    C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\ATK Package\ATK Media\DMedia.exe -- is NOT necessary at startup

Generally speaking, programs not needed at startup are those programs that you can launch manually when needed such as Windows Mail.

However, regarding determining if AVG is causing the slowness, the way to test is to disable it and install Microsoft Security Essentials and see if that makes a difference.

I will uninstall avg first, install security essentials (or do it without see if laptop is faster?) see which result it will give.

Re: startpage changed, commercials on screen

There were two avg apps in program list to uninstall : avg security and avg

after uninstalling avg securiy I wanted to uninstall avg, but it gave an errorcode and gave me a button to close the window or to reboot.

I know after the first uninstall, I needed to choose to reboot or later, I choosed for later.

But after reboot I tried to uninstall the avg, it turns out this is avg zen.

are avg security and avg zen two different antivirus?

    Hi haramo (and Corrine).
It is included in AVG protection (free and pro), in AVG performance (free and pro) and in AVG ultimate.

AVG has a removal tool at AVG | Download tools and utilities which should be used after uninstalling via Programs and Features. Restart and install MSE.

Re: startpage changed, commercials on screen

    Hi, haramo.

Since the laptop is faster than before, let's start with removing the tools used:

    Please download Delfix from here.

Ensure the following boxes are checked:
    • Remove disinfection tools
    • Create registry backup
    • Purge system restore
    • Click Run

The program will run for a few moments and then notepad will open with a log. Please paste the log in your next reply.

Now, to answer your questions, no, I don't believe AVG was installed incorrectly. Rather it, including its eight drivers and browser add-ons, tend to use resources. That said, it is your computer so your choice if you want to try reinstalling it. However, I suggest you create a restore point before doing so. MSE unisntalls cleanly through Programs and Features. No removal tool is necessary as it does not include unnecessary additions.
