value manually deleted. to be sure, the actual value had ".Trigger_1" appended to the end and its data was "6.1.7600.21416@@2". here's a screenshot of the entire subkey after deletion: attempted SP1 (KB976932) install via Windows Update afterward and it failed with the same error. not for...

have tried the basic stuff—manual install, troubleshooting former WSUS deployment and related GPOs, renaming SoftwareDistribution folder, running SFC, SURT, etc. CBS folder here and SFCFix log attached. :banghead: TIA!
