Problem with WU after restore

I had a hard disk error and had to restore my system from a previous image file, which was somewhat dated. The restore seemed to work OK in that I can now boot back into Windows. When I tried to to perform a Windows Update, I get the error "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates...
