JF3_MBC, sorry to hear about your hard disk. In may case, the disk is fine and chkdsk shows no errors and I have had the problem for very many months with no disk issues, so I "suspect" yours may be a coincidence. David

Yes, I tried all the fixes suggested and I am reasonably competent with PC's and Windows and have fixed many of the family's pc problems with the aid of the internet, but not this one. Maybe one of the bright people on here will find the solution....

SFC /scannow reports 2 files which it can not repair.

I've tried SFC several times, including running it from Windows Installation DVD, but never fixes these two files. Reports that hash checksum is incorrect in main file and the backup file. Had a spot of bother with long boot times just before on the laptop but a chkdsk /r seemed to fix it. I...

Thanks for your help. I've run the above Fix-it link in normal mode (no change) and aggressively mode (again, no change). Rebooted immediately after aggressive run but, again, no change. The white flag with red circle and a cross in it still exists as does the error as shown in my first screen...

Both manual and Automatic updates work fine. I am using Windows Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials. All pretty standard. I can switch the alert off, but it would be nice to have an alert when the updates really DON'T happen, instead of all the time. David

Thanks Tom. I have rerun surt and it reached the end properly. I attach the log files. With my very limited knowledge things look pretty similar in the logs but I can't say I understand them. David
