[SOLVED] Windows 8.1 Update 1 failed 80073712

No worries! Thanks for bringing that to my attention, I've asked niemiro to update those instructions so others don't do the same :)

Your CBS log doesn't reveal much about the error, so we'll have to set DISM on it, but from the little information I have from the CBS log I'm hopeful this is one of the 0x80073712 errors we'll be able to fix!

DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
    button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  3. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Finally got it working....

There were some corrupted files in WinSxS. I think they appeared after several BSODs...

I tried

dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbased

several times and traced changes in cbs.log and winsxs dir.

I found empty folders amd64* and some dll files 12 bytes length... so I removed bad dirs (one should take ownership and change permissions at first)

and after several iterations I've got

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

eventually succeeded.

Really sorry for taking your time Tom, I really appreciate your help and I should wait for next instructions before trying another methods. But I need this update for my work asap, so when I read andreya108 reply, I decided to give it a try, and luckily it worked. Thank you again, Tom.

Here is what I have done to make this KB2919355 installed successfully (Please note that it only works for my case, if need assistant please read this thread, then start a new thread):

[1] Run Command Prompt as Administrator

[2] Run command:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If this command failed, go to Step [4]

[3] Run command:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

If this command succeeded, go to Step [5]

[4] Open logs file at %WINDIR%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Find the "Error" status block at the end of log file. It would be:

Then go to %WINDIR%\WinSxS, find folder [NAME OF CORRUPTED COMPONENT].Take ownership of that folder and its files and edit your account permission on those folder and files to "Full control".
Move that folder to a temporary folder outside.

Back to Step [2]

[5] Restart

[6] Run Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu

[7] Pray
 
Followed your directions and removed folder "amd64_microsoft-windows-ie-ieetwcollector_31bf3856ad364e35_11.0.9600.16438_none_c6cbcc66e5c85f87"

Ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Why the hell this thread is marked as "Solved" ?!?!

There is no solution!
Not even a replay on the last post of the questioneer.

I got the same problem and everyone just tells to run

And the next "solution" everyone is about is "do a reinstall", which is not really a solution, cause if you have a tiling you won't go and buy a new car.
