    Windows Vista Optional Update Question

Hi everybody, I installed all 'important' Windows Vista updates this morning, but I'm not sure if I should install this optional update for Vista, especially since it says once it's installed it can't be removed.

It is: "Update for Root Certificates for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems [December 2012] (KB931125)
    Download size: 384 KB
You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.
    Update type: Optional
This item updates the list of root certificates on your computer to the list that is accepted by Microsoft as part of the Microsoft Root Certificate Program. Adding additional root certificates to your computer enables you to use Extended Validation (EV) certificates in Internet Explorer, a greater range of security enhanced Web browsing, encrypted e-mail, and security enhanced code delivery. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed."

What do you think? edit: I'm not sure if I should have posted this in Windows Updates 'errors', since it's not an error yet. ; )

Re: Windows Vista Optional Update Question

    Hello Dee :)

I think that you should install it. As updates go, it is not particularly likely to have any bugs in it. As a general rule, Microsoft updates are very reliable, but this, I would think, is even less likely to cause problems than most others.

This update basically helps with authenticating secure websites. If a website you use eventually starts using one of the root certificates added by this update, and you don't have this update installed, you may have problems accessing the full range of features in that website.

In my opinion, it is best to keep the root certificates up to date, and extremely important to install any root certificate revokation updates.

    Hi Richard : )

Thanks for explaining the update. I hate it when they give me the option. ; ) But you've reassured me, so I'll do it.

    Thanks again, Dianne
