"Another one?!?"
I know, right?
And worse, this was self-inflicted.
I have a serious issue with Microsoft and their invasive updates and "feature" pushes. I messed up my system to prevent it (essentially to no avail, really), and now I'm at the mercy of Microsoft and you fine folks to get my system back up again.
I'll go even further and admit that I did THIS EXACT SAME THING last year.
I have no excuse. I'm just fed up with Microsoft force-feeding junk into my system, but I also rely on Windows for my daily work.
Still, I knew this was going to happen. No excuse.
Summary:
I edited numerous system registry keys and set my account as owner while also denying all other system accounts, where possible.
I took ownership of numerous system folders on the boot drive and denied access to all other system accounts, where possible.
I did the same with any services and tasks I could, while also setting a local user with an incorrect password (when I could) for services/tasks to run under.
I regularly deleted the "SoftwareDistribution" directory contents and took ownership.
I ran a Microsoft-made tool that enables one to "disable" the installation of updates (I did this AFTER all the above, so not sure the effect).
System Details:
· OS - Windows 10 x64
· Original installed OS - Windows 8 Retail
· Age of system - ~5 years
· Age of (most recent) OS installation - Dec 2017ish(?)
· CPU - Intel i7-6800K
· Video Card - EVGA GTX 770
· MotherBoard - Asus x99-Pro
· Power Supply - PowerCooler 750watt
· Custom-built desktop
Logs:
SFC scan run with /veriflyonly param shows multiple permission overlap earrors for system files and overlap warnings for registry files.
I hesitate to run SFC or DISM and apply changes until advised.
Is it safe to run "sfc /scannow" snd let Windows try and automatically apply corrections? I feel like the last time I blindly let Windows try and automatically resolve this problem it became an even worse issue.
