Re: Cannot install Security and Preview of Monthly Quartery Rollup for Windows 7 x64

    Hi,

Performed Windows Update under Clean Boot state. Windows Update failed on the 2019-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4480970) reporting error code 80070057 again.

Attached are zipped CBS.log, along with a couple of screen-shots of the Window Update error and Update History.

    Thanks.

The Software hive looks good and the repair was done.
Check Windows Update again and report the result.
If it fails, run sfc /scannow again and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

Re: Cannot install Security and Preview of Monthly Quartery Rollup for Windows 7 x64

    Hi,

Success! Well, sort of... Windows Update was able to download and install 2019-01 Security Quality Monthly Rollup for Windows 7 x64-based Systems (KB4480970) - Fantastic, and many thanks for fixing this!

However, I now have the following 2 new issues appearing immediately after the update (and which were not there immediately prior to the successful update):

    Issue 1:

Booting up the computer (noting the PC is configured to auto-login to an account), Windows displays the following message:
Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service
    Please consult your system administrator
    OK
Pressing the OK button then displays a black screen which disappears after about 5-10 minutes. Only then will the system return to the main login screen allowing me to successfully login to the PC.

I had this problem a few month ago immediately after another Windows Update. I was able to 'fix' the problem back then by using the System Restore function to revert to a restore point prior to the update. I can try this now, but fear that it will undo the changes you have made to fix the Security Update problem. I also do not want to permanently remove the auto-login configuration. What do you advise I should do?
    Issue 2:

I can no longer access the PC using RDP. When I run the Windows RDP program, I get the following message when attempting to logon via RDP:

    An authentication error has occurred.
The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted.

    Remote computer:
This could be due to an expired password.
Please update your password if it has expired.
For assistance, contact your administrator or technical support.
The password is not set to expire, and clearly has not expired as I am able to login locally on the PC.

I have never had this issue before. My thought is to use the System Restore function, but as with Issue 1 I fear it will undo the changes you have made. What do you advise I should do?

    Thanks.

Re: Cannot install Security and Preview of Monthly Quartery Rollup for Windows 7 x64

According to this MS article KB4480970 is indeed the culprit. There's also a solution presented:
run from an elevated command prompt (run as Administrator).
    • reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\system /v LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    • Reboot the PC.
Please try that and report the result.

Re: Cannot install Security and Preview of Monthly Quartery Rollup for Windows 7 x64

    Hi,

I ran the command and it reported the operation completed successfully. I then rebooted the PC and confirm the command has fixed the RDP issue - I am able to log in remotely again! Many thanks.

Issue 1 is still a problem. With this issue, I forgot to mention the system reports "Please wait..." for a few seconds before displaying the "Windows could not connect..." message in Post #29.

    Thanks.

Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.

    1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
    2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
    3. Press the Fix button.
    4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
    5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
    6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
    7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

    Hi,

Do you have any more steps or thoughts to fix the SENS connection issue during bootup?

If not, then I will try using the System Restore function to revert to the restore point prior created by the successful security update, and then re-install the security update again, since this is what worked for me a few months ago.

    Please let me know.

    Many thanks.

Re: Cannot install Security and Preview of Monthly Quartery Rollup for Windows 7 x64

Download MiniToolBox and save the file on your desktop.

Note: Save all your work and close all programs!
Rightclick "MiniToolBox" and select "Run as administrator".

If you see the startup message "Are you sure you want to continue?" select Yes.
    Put checkmarks at following items:

    • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Devices (Only Problems)
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
    • List Minidump Files
    • List Restore Points

    Click "Go".
When the scan is finished a logfile with the name "MTB.txt" will appear on your desktop.
Post this logfile as an attachment in your next reply.

    Hi,

MiniToolBox has been run. Log file MTB.txt is attached.

BTW, also tried booting the PC into a Clean Boot state, and the SENS issue was still present.

    Thanks.

Re: Cannot install Security and Preview of Monthly Quartery Rollup for Windows 7 x64

    Step 1:
    Uninstall following programs:
    • Ask Toolbar
    • Ask Toolbar Updater
    • Bonjour
    • iTunes
    Restart the machine.

    Step 2: Update Java
The Java version on the computer is outdated and may have a security risk.
Open this web page to download the latest version. Click 'Free Java Download' and then 'Agree and Start Free Download'.
Download the installer jxpiinstall.exe and run it.
    Click Install and then Install>.
Warning: You may get a choice to install additional software and/or allow to change your browser settings. Uncheck all that!
If you get a pop-up saying "Out-of-date Java versions detected.", click Uninstall>. This may remove the outdated Java versions.

Please report if the above went well.

Re: Cannot install Security and Preview of Monthly Quartery Rollup for Windows 7 x64

    Hi,

I've successfully done most of Step 1 uninstalls (Ask Toolbar, Ask Toolbar Updater, and Bonjour). Removing Bonjour cleared a lot of the messages from the MTB.txt file (see attached) but Issue 1 still exists.

Before I uninstall iTunes (last of Step 1) and then update Jana (Step 2), can you please confirm if the uninstall of iTunes is really necessary. I have a library in iTunes I would prefer not to rebuild (should there be issues reinstating the library on a new install). The MTB.txt also doesn't show any issues with iTunes (though the service that launches iTunes reports an issue). If I need to uninstall iTunes then I will.

Aside from the above, I tried booting in Safe Boot mode with network and Issue 1 did not occur. I was also then looking at the Winsock entries generated by the MiniToolBox.exe and noticed a couple for Windows Live, and some for the AV software I use. Could either Windows Live (since it was last installed/updated in 2010), or the AV software, be causing the issue I am having - worth uninstalling?

    Thanks.

The MTB.txt also doesn't show any issues with iTunes (though the service that launches iTunes reports an issue).
That's why I wanted you to uninstall iTunes.
You can keep iTunes for now if you prefer.

Perform step 2 in message #35 to update Java.

    1. Click the Start button and then type cmd in the searchbox. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator.
    2. A User Account Control dialog may come up asking for approval. If it does go ahead and allow.
    3. A command prompt window will open. Copy and paste the following into the command-prompt and hit enter.
    wmic service get name,displayname,pathname,exitcode > "%USERPROFILE%\desktop\services.txt"
    4. After the command runs there will be a file on your desktop named services.txt.
    5. Attach this file to your next reply.

    Hi,

Thanks - I have kept iTunes for the present time.

Java has been updated successfully, and the old version uninstalled.

    Attached is the services.txt file.

    Thanks.
