    Hi,

    Performed Windows Update under Clean Boot state. Windows Update failed on the 2019-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4480970) reporting error code 80070057 again.

    Attached are zipped CBS.log, along with a couple of screen-shots of the Window Update error and Update History.

    WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.

    • Download SFCFix and move the executable to your desktop.
    • Download the attachment SFCFixScript.txt and save it on your desktop.
    • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
    • Drag the SFCFixScript.txt file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.
    • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
    • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
    • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

    The Software hive looks good and the repair was done.
    Check Windows Update again and report the result.
    If it fails, run sfc /scannow again and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

    Hi,

    Success! Well, sort of... Windows Update was able to download and install 2019-01 Security Quality Monthly Rollup for Windows 7 x64-based Systems (KB4480970) - Fantastic, and many thanks for fixing this!

    However, I now have the following 2 new issues appearing immediately after the update (and which were not there immediately prior to the successful update):


    Issue 1:

    Booting up the computer (noting the PC is configured to auto-login to an account), Windows displays the following message:
    Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service
    Please consult your system administrator
    OK
    Pressing the OK button then displays a black screen which disappears after about 5-10 minutes. Only then will the system return to the main login screen allowing me to successfully login to the PC.

    I had this problem a few month ago immediately after another Windows Update. I was able to 'fix' the problem back then by using the System Restore function to revert to a restore point prior to the update. I can try this now, but fear that it will undo the changes you have made to fix the Security Update problem. I also do not want to permanently remove the auto-login configuration. What do you advise I should do?
    Issue 2:

    I can no longer access the PC using RDP. When I run the Windows RDP program, I get the following message when attempting to logon via RDP:

    An authentication error has occurred.
    The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted.

    Remote computer:
    This could be due to an expired password.
    Please update your password if it has expired.
    For assistance, contact your administrator or technical support.
    The password is not set to expire, and clearly has not expired as I am able to login locally on the PC.

    I have never had this issue before. My thought is to use the System Restore function, but as with Issue 1 I fear it will undo the changes you have made. What do you advise I should do?

    According to this MS article KB4480970 is indeed the culprit. There's also a solution presented:
    run from an elevated command prompt (run as Administrator).
    • reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\system /v LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    • Reboot the PC.
    Please try that and report the result.

    Hi,

    I ran the command and it reported the operation completed successfully. I then rebooted the PC and confirm the command has fixed the RDP issue - I am able to log in remotely again! Many thanks.

    Issue 1 is still a problem. With this issue, I forgot to mention the system reports "Please wait..." for a few seconds before displaying the "Windows could not connect..." message in Post #29.

    Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.

    1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
    2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
    3. Press the Fix button.
    4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
    5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
    6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
    7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.
