    KB976932 (SP1) error 80004005 Win7 Home Prem (x64) - rolls back after 99% config

    Hi,

    Summary:
I've tried installing this a lot of times over last 12 months. Always the same result: rolls back when it's 99% configured. Today I tried everything I could find online. Still same problem. A couple of odd things: 1) CBS.log seems to think my comp is AMD but it's Core i7 (circa 2009). Today's CBS log attached. 2) Also, checkSUR log shows one error, a strange entry with a { instead of a digit. In regedit the corresponding key values do not have the {. Today's checkSUR log also attached.

    I've tried:
    1. install through window's update
    2. SURT, sfc /scannow, chkdisk on boot, downloaded SP1 iso and did clean boot install

    Please help!

    Cheers
    jw

Hi, no problem, I've spent so long on this that a couple more days don't make a difference. I've tried everything that I could think of and found on the Internet... nothing works. I wonder if it's something as trivial as the { symbol in the checkSUR log that I attached. And why does AMD come up so often? My PC has an Intel processor!

    Re: KB976932 (SP1) error 80004005 Win7 Home Prem (x64) - rolls back after 99% config

    Hi :)

The amd64 refers to OS architecture and not to the CPU.

    Manually Delete Registry Key
    1. Click your Start button and type regedit in the search box.
    2. Right-click on regedit.exe that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes to the UAC prompt.
    3. The registry editor will open which is a window divided vertically into two panes. Make sure you scroll all the way to the top of the screen and click any black downward pointing arrows so that they turn white and all the keys are collapsed.
    4. Now click the arrow next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and it will expand all the subkeys beneath it.
    5. Scroll down and find the subkey named SOFTWARE and expand that. Continue expanding the following ones Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\ComponentDetect
    6. Beneath ComponentDetect you should see a key named x86_microsoft-windows-m..do-backcompat-tlb60_31bf3856ad364e35_0.0.0.0_none_10b73e58391c1550 (You will likely need to scroll down but you will eventually get to it)
    7. Right-click on the key named x86_microsoft-windows-m..do-backcompat-tlb60_31bf3856ad364e35_0.0.0.0_none_10b73e58391c1550 and select Permissions...
    8. On the Permissions dialog click the Advanced button.
    9. Click the Permissions tab on the Advanced Security Settings dialog.
    10. Click the Change button
    11. Type <your username> in the text box and click OK.
    12. Check the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects".
    13. Click the Permissions tab again and uncheck "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent".
    14. If prompted with a Windows Security warning with Add and Remove buttons, click Add.
    15. Click OK to close the Advanced Security Settings dialog.
    16. Make sure the <Your Username> group is selected in the Permissions dialog and ensure that the checkbox for Full Control under the Allow column is checked. Click OK.
    17. Now, right click on the Package_18_for_KB2698{65~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.2 value and select Delete. Answer Yes to the confirm dialog.
    18. Run System Readiness Tool again and attach CheckSUR.log after it completes.

    About this step

    10. Click the Change button

and the ones following, I only have " add" and "edit" buttons. (See attached screenshot.) Also, it looks like there's an entry for Users. What exactly should <Your Username> stand for? Is it the computer name?

I don't have the option to "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects".
I have (see previous screenshot) "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object." It sounds the same, but is it really?

I get an "Access is Denied" error when I try to change permissions for Administrator, and even if I just try to uncheck "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object."

I am running regedit as Administrator.

    Let me see what's up.

Step#1 - Export registry as hive

    • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
    • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
    • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
    • Once selected, click File > Export....
    • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*).
    • Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
    • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
    • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
    • If the file is too large to upload here, upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

    Good night!

    Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
    1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
    2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
    3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
    4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
    5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.
    6. Run SURT again and attach CheckSUR.log.

    Re: KB976932 (SP1) error 80004005 Win7 Home Prem (x64) - rolls back after 99% config

    Here's setupapi.dev.log.

BTW, I tried updating with SP1 but it failed. Always the same: initially it says "Update successful", then it restarts and configures after restarting, then tries again, then fails at 99% and rolls back.

I noticed two older versions of setupapi.dev.log so in case they're useful I've attached them too: one might be from just before the roll back, and the other is from July. I noticed that the older ones are all much bigger than the newest one.
