Hello again, the success was short lived.
It worked for a couple of hours and then failed again.
I just did again all the steps I tried before, but Nothing worked.
So, here are the new détails of my problem.
Description of the issue : Windows Update looks for updates for aproximately one hour and then fails with the error code 0x800705b4.
OS : Windows 10 family
Processor x64
Version 1709
OS Version 16299.334
The
CBS.log
I checked for virus with Avast and Malwarebytes, PC is clean.
I then removed both Avast and Malwarebytes so they don't interfere with Windows Update.
I don't use a VPN, I unchecked the box "Notify me of updates to other Microsoft products when I update Windows".
Here is a list of what I tried and the results, all of those were made after a clean install.
Method 1 : CHKDSK
In command prompt (PowerShell Admin) : Chkdsk volume: /f /r
"Invalid drive, path, or filename" (same result with /c or /d. Did I do Something wrong ?)
Method 2 : Windows Update Troubleshooter
The version from my computer stomps on "Pending reboot Check" with no end and no result.
The version downloaded from
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262 works but found no issue.
The downloaded version also offers to look for update before anything, but if I agree it stomps like the version from my computer.
Method 3 : downloading then installing manually the last update.
I identified KB4089848 as the one I needed and downloaded it from Microsoft KB. Installation was impossible, stuck on "looking for updates".
I disconnected my internet provider box to stop KB4089848's installation from looking for updates and then installed KB4089848 while offline. Installation was successful, but when I reconnected to the internet, Windows Update was still unable to find new updates, same symptômes.
Method 4 : Restart computer and try to install again
Task Host Manager sometime refuses to stop, but restarting the computer doesn't work.
Méthode 5 : System Update Readiness tool CheckSur.exe
Command prompt (PowerShell as admin) DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
"The restoration was done. The operation succeeded."
The log is linked above, but :
CheckSur: hrStatus: 0x0 [S_OK], download Result: 0x0 [S_OK]
Count of times corruption detected: 0
Method 6 : System File Checker tool SFC.exe
Command prompt (PowerShell as admin) sfc /scannow
"
Windows Resource Protection Program found no integrity violation."
Method 7 : Reset Windows Update components
Manual installation of KB4090914 : had to be done offline like previously, but it didn't fix the issue.
Method 8 : Delete any incorrect registry values (I have no idea what this is about, I followed a guide)
regedit.exe
I was supposed to find in regedit.exe HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS and delete PendingXmlIdentifier, NextQueueEntryIndex and AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving if they appear.
In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, the folder COMPONENTS wasn't ther, I had to use a method I saw on a different forum :
1\ Open Regedit
2\ Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
3\ Click 'File' and 'Load hive...'
4\ Browse to "C:\Windows\System32\config", select 'components' (file type=file) and click 'Open'
5\ Enter "COMPONENTS" as the key name and click 'ok'
COMPONENTS did appear, but I was unable to find any of the 3 values I was supposed to delete. Once again, maybe I did Something wrong here.
Method 9 : Run SFCFix.exe
"The restoration was done. The operation succeeded."
No log opened at the end of the operation, though. Is it the CBS.log ?
Anyway, I'm all out of options.
I don't know why the problem was solved for a couple of hours when I first installed
KB4089848.
While it was working, I finally downloaded the game I was looking for from Windows Store, then played with it until I got disconnected when I the Windows Update issue reappeared. I'm almost certain that my computer is unable to find Microsoft servers on its own (or identify to them), but I have no idea why or how to fix it.
Sorry if that was a bit long, but I wanted to be sure you had everything you needed.
I remain available for any further question.
Thanks again for your help.
Best regards,
