    [10v1607b14393 x64] 10 Update Assistant fails to update

    Hi, I've been searching for a solution to a persistent Windows 10 Update failure. I'm running out of patience, and hope someone on this site can help as I see many other people have had similar issues. I have tried various suggestions so far to no avail, but not obviously any of the scripts on other threads which are targeted at specific machine/software combinations.

    Background:
    Windows 10 Home v1607 release 14393.1593 (as per System About).
    ASUS Desktop PC K30BF_M32BF_A_F_K31BF series.
    AMD A10-7800 Radeon R7 processor.
    64-bit OS.

    I have followed the pre-posting instructions on this site:

    1) I cannot run SFC /scannow as it gives message "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service". NB am running as administrator and the Windows Modules Install Service is running. I am unable to stop and restart this service; should I set it to start as manual and reboot, then start it? Or is this unimportant at this stage?

    2) the "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" command (run as administrator) failed with error 1726 (RPC failure). I have attached the C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log.

    3) SFCFix.exe
    (run as administrator) returned a number of messages and failed at the point of calling the DISM cleanup as above.

    Symptom of Windows Update error:

    The update fails at 87% in the Windows Update Assistant stage "Updating Windows 10 .. please wait".

    I have supplied numerous logs below. Please note I ran an update attempt between 14:46 and 15:25 GMT on 6Feb18, so the log file entries over this time span may be relevant.

    The WindowsUpdate log file in Windows 10 has to be decoded using a powerShell command called Get-WindowsUpdateLog, but I don't know how to do this so I have not added these logs. Here are the ETL files if they help.
    https://1drv.ms/u/s!As9Q-YJEqTnmhzTudlUdeGiBvnZs

    if they help, also c:\windows\Panther\NewOS\Panther logs

    and c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution logs

    and c:\windows\inf logs
    https://1drv.ms/u/s!As9Q-YJEqTnmhzjF-ScMzk_qSMXt

    I have attempted various fixes prior to today (6Feb18) including:
    completely removing 3rd-party antivirus (NB now reinstalled for my protection);
    running the Windows Update Troubleshooter app (all OK);
    downloading & creating a bootable Windows 10 image using the Windows Media Creator tool and trying to install this as a clean version of Windows10;
    booting into the equivalent of "safe mode";
    logging in as administrator;
    updating drivers where necessary;
    renaming the DRIVERS file to
    DRIVERS.old so that a new DRIVERS file was created on boot-up.

    none of these has worked...

    any suggestions out there?

    Hello and welcome

    Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named SleepyDude. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

    Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

    That setup sounds fine to me; I appreciate the pretty fast response to my query yesterday. I won't be around for several hours today so if you send any more messages today please accept my apologies in advance. Steve

    Windows Standalone installer says "this update is not applicable to this PC" (or words to that effect)

    Re: Windows 10 Update Assistant fails to update from Windows 10 Home v1607 14393.1593

    I cleared the update cache and logs and started an update via Windows Update Assistant which has failed again at about 88% during the update phase. I have converted the ETL files from the update into areadable log file suing powershell -> Get-WindowsUpdateLog, and attach the log to this message in case it proves helpful to you. However, it only seems to me to cover the various downloads and not the actual update of the PC, unless I'm misunderstanding it.

    Try to Uninstall the update

    - open the Command Prompt as Administrator
    - type or Copy & Paste the command:
    Code:
    wusa  /uninstall  /KB:4035631
    If it worked Restart the System and try to install the update again.

    Hi,

    I want you to try to upgrade to the latest Windows 10 using the following steps:
    - first download Windows 10 to create a DVD or Flash Drive using the Windows Media Creation Tool (follow the instructions available on the page if you have doubts please ask)
    - disconnect the computer from the Internet by disconnecting the Ethernet cable or if you use Wireless disconnect from the network
    - disable the Antivirus program
    - open the DVD or Flash Drive containing the downloaded Windows 10 and run the Setup to start the instalation
    - connect to the internet only when the installation finished

    Please report the result.

    Re: Windows 10 Update Assistant fails to update from Windows 10 Home v1607 14393.1593

    Sleepydude, sorry for the delay. I tried to create a Windows 10 installation on a clean flash drive as requested but each time the creation tool failed part way through the "Creating Windows Media" phase with a message "there was a problem running this tool. .. error code 0x80070522 - 0xA001A".

    Than I tried using the Media Creation tool to do an in-place update of Windows; again it failed.

    NB the antivirus application has been completely removed from the PC, and during the Windows update the internet connection was disabled as requested. I also previously disabled the Windows Update service and purged the update cache (c:\windows\softwaredistribution).

    If any logs might help you, please let me know what you need (and where thay are on the disk).

    (Maybe the answer is to completely rebuild the PC (wipe the disk and install Windows from scratch, then reinstall all my apps). I have the Windows 10 Home licence key but no installation media, so I don't know how to achieve this successfully.)

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

    No problem. I search for that error running the Media Creation Tool and it seems there is a very simple solution that you can try. The solution is to copy or download the Media Creation Tool directly to the flash drive and then execute the tool from there.

    Let me know the result.

    Re: Windows 10 Update Assistant fails to update from Windows 10 Home v1607 14393.1593

    I was able to create a copy of windows 10 on a flash drive by copying the Media Creation Tool directly to the flash drive and then executing the tool from there as you suggested. however, when I then tried to install windows 10 using the setup.exe on the flash drive, the installation failed.

    I will not be able to communicate ith you tomorrow (Tuesday) as I shall be at work. If you need any logs from this PC, send me a message and I will supply them tomorrow night.

    Thanks, Steve

    Hi Steve,

    Please describe as best as you can the point to where the installation worked, any error that you got, etc.

    Also try to search for the following logs and post them:
    - C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\setupact.log
    - C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.log
    - C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err

    Note: You may not find all of these logs because they are created depending on the stage at which the installation reaches...
