    [Server2012R2Upd3 x64] "We couldn't complete the update"

    Hi,

Thanks for the great site, and help with this issue. This is a Server 2012 R2 DC that is a VM. It has not had issues in the past, but updates hadn't been done for many months. I was able to get some minor updates installed, but am at an impasse now with the "We couldn't complete the update" message and rollback. I did run DISM as a troubleshooting process, as well as a manual install of a "Rollup" update, but had the same result.

    Thanks very much!

Attached is the link to the CBS Folder, as well as the text from SFCFix:

Re: Server 2012 R2, "We couldn't complete the update"

    Hi,

I have done some additional troubleshooting, but find myself stuck.

    1. I analyzxed the updates that weren't updated, then started them by selecting a few of the oldest, which were successfully updated. I continued with this pprocess until 2 remain.
    2. I have attempted to install thiose updates, singly, or together, with the same result of "We couldn't complete the update.
    3. Those two are KB4054519 and KB4057903. Interestingly, they both show as succeeded, but they are offered again, and I am getting the couldn't install and rollback message at boot.

I am rerunning sfc /scannow, DISM, and sfcfix and will attach those logs in the next message.

Thanks. I really appreciate your assistance.

SFCFix kicked off another run of DISM, so I will name that CBS2.zip

As I said SFCFix kicked off DISM, and when that was finished, didn't open the text document. I went into the directory on C:, and copied it out of the log file.

Can you tell me if your Device Manager is clean (no yellow exclamation marks anywhere)?

    Hi,

This is a Virtual Hard Disk,.vhdx, created through a Hyper-V Host. I believe it is dynamically expanding. It is a Gen 1 VM. It's approx. 126GB.

Re: [Server2012R2Upd3 x64] "We couldn't complete the update"

On the two updates that I reference above, when doing the "restart", it gives the message "we couldn't complete the updates, then rolls back. It does that behavior once more, then reboots normally.

Otherwise the Server runs well. There are some of the pesky dcom errors in event viewer that I haven't taken care of.

What AV software are you using? Is it an option to temporarily remove it for troubleshooting purposes?
Have you tried to update from a Clean Boot mode?

Re: [Server2012R2Upd3 x64] "We couldn't complete the update"

    Hi,

Great ideas. These are some things that I should've already tried, as basic troubleshooting. It's always amazing how the obvious can sometimes slip by us. I see that there are a few items that can be cleaned up, as well. I will do as suggested and get back back to you today.

    Thanks,

    Kurt

Re: [Server2012R2Upd3 x64] "We couldn't complete the update"

    Hi,

I uninstalled a few items that were unnecessary, and also set up a clean boot. I reran Windows update with the same result. As I said earlier, Windows Update history continues to indicate that these updates are successful, despite the failure.

I also reran SFC and DISM. SFC indicates no problems, and DISM always indicates it has resolved corruption. I have attached the dism.log, as the warnings always point to the same items. I have the old dism.log, if you'd like, but the one you have is a fresh one.

    Thanks,

    Kurt
