[7SP1 x64] Monthly Quality Rollup failures - KB4041681, KB4054518, and KB4056894

I was out of town for a bit, and when I returned and fired up my desktop I had a number of Windows updates to slog through, as well as a number of program updates. I just found that KB4041681, KB4054518, and KB4056894 all failed to install, all with error code 800004005. I tried running Hotfix KB4054518 without any luck - the installs continue to fail. I turned off Windows update completely (no sense making the log jam any worse), and thought I'd better seek help from someone more capable.

FWIW, I'm using Window7 Pro SP1 x64 and Malwarebytes Pro AV. Checking the registry shows Malwarebytes has set the required registry entry for KB4056894.

Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the quick response!

Additional information:
SFC Scan -> Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations
SURT/DISM Scan -> The System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821) hung while initializing and never recovered. I gave it several hours. Note in the screenshot above that it ran successfully twice earlier today.

For my next trick?

After rebooting this morning, I retried the System Update Readiness Tool - and it ran to completion ("Installation complete")
I'll continue working through the posting instructions and post back here once again.

Re: [7SP1 x64] Monthly Quality Rollup failures - KB4041681, KB4054518, and KB4056894

Interesting:

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Attempt to run Windows Updates just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as the update. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

Re: [7SP1 x64] Monthly Quality Rollup failures - KB4041681, KB4054518, and KB4056894

The Process Monitor file was huge - thankfully it shrank considerably when zipped. Zip file containing both Dropbox - CBS + Logfile.zip

Hopefully I turned off Process Monitor at the right time - I waited until the message Installation Complete showed for KB4056894, and before rebooting. The installation failure typically occurs when I reboot to complete the installation.

Re: [7SP1 x64] Monthly Quality Rollup failures - KB4041681, KB4054518, and KB4056894

Apologies - I'm attempting to operate above my pay grade in this thread, and my ignorance is showing. Have a look at Dropbox - setupapi.dev.log

Perhaps of futher interest is the fact that the installation failure always occurs late in the process when rebooting - when the "Please Wait" screen reaches 98% or more - then the system reverts.

Please try disabling Secure Boot in your BIOS/UEFI and see if that makes a difference.

Re: [7SP1 x64] Monthly Quality Rollup failures - KB4041681, KB4054518, and KB4056894

Unfortunately, my system is older and has no Secure Boot in BIOS - let alone UEFI. The security settings consist of "Set Supervisor Password" and "Set User Password". Both are currently blank.

The BIOS Utility Setup is V 02.61 from American Megatrends, and the BIOS itself is version 2209 (Build: 9/21/10) - the most recent available for the motherboard (Asus P6T Deluxe).

A sad state of affairs, but there you have it.

Re: [7SP1 x64] Monthly Quality Rollup failures - KB4041681, KB4054518, and KB4056894

Hard drive setup:
C: (handling program data) - 4 1.0TB drives in a RAID 1/0 configuration
D: (handling data files) - 4 1.5TB drives in a RAID 5 configuration
The arrays are handled by a RocketRAID 2680 card plugged into the motherboard, with an onboard BIOS V1.0 from HighPoint Technolgies

Hard Disk Sentinel reports the disks are all healthy, although there is one disk in D: I should consider replacing in the not-too-far-distant future.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
2. Download the attached file, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
6. SFCFix will now process the script.
7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
6. SFCFix will now process the script.
7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
