[10v1703b15063 x64] PC Freezing Multiple Times a Day After KB4048954

After I tried to install cumulative update KB4048954, under update history it said "Requires a restart to finish installing". Multiple freezes a day after this failed update. Sfc and dism return errors. Update assistant from Microsoft does not work (freezes), media creation tool gets stuck at 33% when updating. Version 1703 (OS Build 15063.674).

Hello and welcome to Sysnative!

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
6. SFCFix will now process the script.
7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload toa file sharing service and just provide the link here.

Step#3 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Attempt to run DISM just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as DISM fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

Hello, I have reviewed your COMPONENTS hive and it appears that you have a severely corrupt hive. I think it's not worth repairing it, because it would take days and even then I couldn't guarantee it's fixed. Is repair install an option for you?

I can consider a repair install. What is the outcome of doing one and what would be the best way to approach doing one?

Repair install repairs the system, but it does not mess with your data or programs, so everything is kept intact. Before we opt for that, may I have you do the following:

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please attach the log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also attach that along with the FRST.txt in your reply.

It seems to be stuck at 33% like I said in my original post. The spinning indicator is moving. Is this a common occurrence with mct? How much total time should I let it run for before stopping?

After around 5 hours of being on 33%, it moved forward and completed the update. Is there anything else you want me to do now?

Re: [10v1703b15063 x64] PC Freezing Multiple Times a Day After KB4048954

I checked for updates which installed KB4051963. I checked again (around half an hour later) and it re-downloaded both the fall update (version 1709) and KB4051963, but it said, "Your device is up to date" after downloading. Should I be worried that these updates re-downloaded for seemingly no reason?

Are there any other issues?
