Looks like we aren't done yet - still un-resolvable errors in cbs.logCBS.logSFCFix.txt. I was, however, able to run the machine in normal mode for about 5 minutes - a new record.

Re: [VistaSP2 x64] SFC corruptions on Acer Aspire 8920G.

It just shuts down and reboots - no error and nothing in the windows logs. There are errors logged on startup (Safe Mode) however including this one. The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 8007043c from line 45 of d:\longhorn\com\complus\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.
My machine does not have a d: drive.

Ignore that, that's just the way it's logged. Does it occur both when plugged in and on battery?

The error message means that a particular service cannot be started because you are in Safe Mode.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but this cannot be fixed by SFC. Sounds like a more serious issue to me with all the powering off.

It is rather strange. I updated the h/d to an SSD and it ran perfectly for about a week. No updates, new software etc. and then one day this behaviour started.

But the reboots persist, okay then I recommend you get the laptop serviced. There's no point trying to fix SFC when there's an even bigger issue at hand.

Re: [VistaSP2 x64] SFC corruptions on Acer Aspire 8920G.

So... I now have a copy of Win7 home Premium SP1 but it will only upgrade my Vista if I can boot to normal mode. I managed to boot long enough to get to the CD and run Setup. I get to Checking compatibility and it spends some time there, then tells me I have to boot from the CD. Frustrated, I nuked the drive and tried to do a clean install but it can't find Mass storage drivers either in AHCI or IDE mode. I'm sure that the machine is physically OK - it will run in Safe Mode for days, run Linux, etc.

Is it seen by the BIOS? Where did you get the copy? Have you tried booting from an USB?

Re: [VistaSP2 x64] SFC corruptions on Acer Aspire 8920G.

Yes it is seen by the BIOS. I have tried 3 install disks (all have worked on other machines). I get varying results (with the same disk). Some times it gets to loading Windows and just reboots; some time I get to pick Language, etc. and then it just hangs. Once I even got to no mass storage driver found but it wouldn't recognize a USB drive that I plugged in containing the drivers.

Re: [VistaSP2 x64] SFC corruptions on Acer Aspire 8920G.

Personally, I think that there is an underlying hardware issue or overheating issue that has to be taken care of based on the facts I'm getting from you. Even if we get the install started somehow, how can we be sure that the machine won't reboot in the middle of the process and then we'd be back to square one.

I thought it might be an overheating problem too but I ran the machine for days in safe mode and kept it very warm and it still ran ok.

Safe Mode means nothing when you've told me that it rebooted unexpectedly during setup, and that's outside of Windows environment. That's why I'm inclined to believe there's a bigger issue present.
