    Re: [W7 x64] Cannot install SP1 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

    Hello and welcome to Sysnative!

    Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
    1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
    2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
    3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
    4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
    5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Afterwards, try installing SP1 and attach CBS.log if it fails.

    Re: [W7 x64] Cannot install SP1 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

Would you please do the following:

    SFC Scan

    1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
    2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
    3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

      sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

      copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

Step#2 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
      1. Download and run the following file.
      2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
      3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
      4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as OneDrive and just provide the link.
    4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Try SP1 again. Once it fails make sure you attach CBS.log and setuapidev.log. The second one is located in: C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log

    Re: [W7 x64] Cannot install SP1 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

    May I get the following:

    Step#1 - FRST Scan

    1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
    2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
    4. Press Scan button.
    5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
    6. Please attach the log back here.
    7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also attach that along with the FRST.txt in your reply.

Are there any other updates available to be installed besides SP1? If yes, please install them.

    Re: [W7 x64] Cannot install SP1 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

There were a few security updates for .NET 4 and they installed just fine.

    Re: [W7 x64] Cannot install SP1 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

Okay, now install SP1 and attach CBS.log if it fails.

    Re: [W7 x64] Cannot install SP1 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

    Hi,

Of course it failed with [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]. When I got hands on this machine the WU was finding updates and installing them except SP1, so the system was seriously outdated.

Do you have .NET Framework enabled under Features?

    Re: [W7 x64] Cannot install SP1 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

    NetFx3 is enabled, but it can't be disabled. Dism /Online /Disable-Feature:NetFx3 fails with ...[HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL].
    I'm attaching relevant dism.log and cbs.log.
