[SOLVED] Windows fails to update, svchost runs cpu usage to 100%

Windows never stops checking for update (ran two nights successively). Win update service within svchost consumes available CPU. I restored my C drive to
an October backup taken after successful Win update, repeated problems cited. Had same problem with this PC (Vista, 32 bit) earlier in the year. Problem
resolved at that time, but has returned.

In order to be able to use my pc, I replaced the Vista OS with Win 7. This resolved the aforementioned problems.
