Windows update checks forever, installs forever on shutdown, sfc not working

Hey everybody. I've been searching the internet high and low for a solution to this problem. Plenty of people seem to be experiencing different forms of it but I haven't been able to find a solution for it. This looks like a fantastic place to get help with something like this.

Here's as much information as I can think to provide. CBS folder is at the bottom of this post. If someone could help me through this I would be forever indebted to you.

- I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and feel like I am having some kind of components hive problem. This started with windows update hanging at "Searching for updates", and eventually lead to visual studio runtime installations hanging, windows defender not being able to update, etc. Whenever I shut down my computer to install an update it will just hang at "Installing 1 of x..."

- sfc /scannow returns "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service."

- When I go to services to start Windows Module Installer (to get windows resource protection working) I receive "Error 1017: The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format."

I think I've included all the pertinent information but please let me know if any more is needed. I will be the happiest person in the world if I can get this fixed without a complete re-install of Windows!

- Yes. Run the SFCFix tool and post the log in your next reply.

Thanks Willy! So SFCFix has been running for about an hour now and has been at "Checking CBS.persist.log . . ." for nearly the entire duration. When I look in c:\windows\logs\cbs there is not actually a CBS.persist.log file in there, only some CbsPersist_*.cab files, CBS.log, and FilterList.log. My CBS.log is 3MB because I deleted the previous one since it was at 500MB and I couldn't open it to look at it, so I guess I won't have a CBS.persist.log until CBS.log gets to 50MB. Where do I go from here?
