I anticipated your reply and downloaded SURT. I started running it at 12:02 and it is still running ( now it's 1:43).

I ran sfc /scannow as an administrator. I got the message that windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations

I let SURT run from 7:30 PM to0 7:30 AM. The standalone installer box was open and searching for updates was bshowing. I could not stop it using the cancel button; I had to stop it using task manager. I hope the sfc log shows something to fix. This is the same computer I worked with Aura on back in March for my post "KB3097989 fails and get error 0x8007312 in update troubleshooter". I will be on line until 11AM EDT today and then back about 8PM this evening. Thanks for helping.

Let's try resetting the Windows Update components, and then running SURT again.

Run Windows Repairs

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...
Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.
Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

17 - Repair Windows Updates
Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.
Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

Ok. But I need to tell you that earlier, after running repair and then SURT not completing ( after a long,long time), I ran repair again and then SURT ran and. showed no errors. I am wondering if I will have to do this again. How long should I wait-- 24 hours?

I downloaded and ran KB 3177725 at 5PM last evening. It is now 3:45PM the next day---WUSA is still searching for updates--- almost 22 hours. Surely something is amiss?
