[SOLVED] Windows Update Problem (Windows 8.1)

Hi,

As of a couple of days ago, I am having trouble with my Windows Updates. The symptoms are:

- trying to download the two updates on my list gives me an 80073712 error
- scanning for further updates just goes on forever
- Windows Modules Installer Worker sometimes starts up randomly even though it's set to "Manual", and needs to be restarted in services.msc

What I've done so far:

- used the Windows Update Troubleshooter, which apparently fixed some errors, but the problem persists
- run the "sfc /scannow" command and got the following error:

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the request operation.

- run the "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth" command and got the following:

The component store is repairable. The operation completed successfully.

- run the "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" command and got the following:

Error: 14098

The component store has been corrupted.

I know reinstalling Windows would solve my problems, but that's usually a stressful time for me for various reasons. Any other way to fix this? Thank you.

I probably should have looked through the instructions before posting a thread, sorry about that. I tried the SFCFix tool, but it didn't seem to do much good. The first time I ran it, it asked for another 15-20 minutes of scanning due to levels of corruption. After waiting for more than an hour, I pressed a random button and the program immediately stopped and declared that it didn't find any corruption. I restarted my PC, downloaded the tool again and gave it another shot, but it ended up the same. This was all there was in the log file:

Could you run SFC again, and when it fails, get the CBS log:

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start

button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

Code:

sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.

Code:

copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

Looking at the logs, it seems that something is not right with the COMPONENTS hive. Lets take a look at that:

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

After applying the fix, the sfc /scannow command completed successfully. It said it fixed some corruptions, but not all of them.

Looks like we're making progress! I've successfully scanned for updates, and it said I had 2 optional updates in my queue. I've downloaded both, but one of them (KB3172514) failed to install. I scanned for updates again, and it's still sitting in my queue.
