Hello,

I continue to have an issue where Windows updates, then tries to configure the updates but fails and reverts the changes. Each subsequent time I start up the computer, it continues to try to configure the updates and fails, again reverting the changes.

Resolution Attempts (3 listed):

1) I have tried running the windows update troubleshooter (Found here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/949358). While it prevents Windows from continuing to try to configure updates and revert changes, it is only a stopgap because with the next Windows update the problem will recur. Moreover, the troubleshooter notes that the problem 0x80070057 cannot be resolved.

2) To try to resolve the 0x80070057 issue, I have used the System Update Readiness Tool provided by Microsoft (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/947821). However, this too was unable to resolve the issue, and the CheckSUR shows the following:

I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide! Please let me know if there is any other information you may need. Thanks!

Note 1: I have attached SFCFix.txt to this post: View attachment SFCFix.txt
Note 2: The CBS zip file was too large to upload, so after I post this message I will use the workaround for large CBS files. (Edit: I have tried to follow the method for uploading large files listed on the following thread (https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/4736-windows-update-forum-posting-instructions.html), but do not see the log file in this thread. Please let me know if I did something wrong or should try to upload again.)

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. If you still need assistance, please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Hello,

Sorry for the delay in replying. I installed the update and it appears to have no issue. However, after I installed the update and restarted the computer, I ran the windows update troubleshooter (Found here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/949358) and see that the 0x80070057 error is still present, and now there is a new error that says "Problem installing recent updates." I can't figure out how to get it to clarify which updates it had problems installing, and when I look at the windows update history section in the control panel it says the update was installed successfully. I've provided two items for your CBS request: (1) the CBS folder from April 20th that I tried to include previously the CBS.log file (Named: CBS 04-20-16); (2) the CBS.log file for today (April 27th), as I ran the windows update troubleshooter after the windows update install and restart (Named: CBS 04-27-2016): Download multiple files from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

Please let me know if you need anything else.

OK, now check for Windows Updates and attempt to install only one of them that show up. Let me know the results.

Hello, I downloaded and installed the following update with no problem: Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3149090)

Also, these updates are listed in the "Optional" section of the updates; I must've forgotten to look at the optional section of the updates when I sent you the original list of updates (or they just appeared when I clicked "Check for Updates"):
Skype for Windows desktop 7.3 (KB2876229)
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3, Graphics Adapter WDDM2.0 - AMD RADEON HD 6350
Intel - Network, Other hardware - Intel(R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2592687)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2830477)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3080079)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3102429)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3138378)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3139923)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3140245)

Edit: There are also these two updates that I didn't see before in the "Important" section:
Update for Microsoft Outlook 2010 (KB3114996) 32-Bit Edition
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.1 for Windows 7 for x64 (KB3102433)

Go ahead and install all of them except the following. Let me know the results.

Code:
Skype for Windows desktop 7.3 (KB2876229)
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3, Graphics Adapter WDDM2.0 - AMD RADEON HD 6350
Intel - Network, Other hardware - Intel(R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection

OK, you should be all set then. It appears there was a conflict with a 3rd party software that was preventing the updates. Go ahead and boot normally. You can reverse the Clean Boot by following instructions at the same link as before.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

Now that we know this, next time there are updates to install go ahead and attempt to install them. If you have an issue you can come back to this thread and we can diagnose which 3rd party app is causing the issue. Usually it's an Antivirus or Security software.

Sound good?

That sounds like a fine plan to me. My only question then is what about the error that the windows update troubleshooter found (0x80070057)? It appears to still be lurking in the background -- is it fine to ignore (at least for now)?

I've really appreciated your help!

As long as Windows Update is working the error that the Windows Update troubleshooter found can be safely ignored. The troubleshooter may report errors even on a machine without any issues.
