[SOLVED] Can't update from IE9 and would like to upgrade to Windows 10

Where to start? I'm guessing it was 18 months ago (or longer) I started having trouble updating Windows 7 Ultimate. The advice I was getting from Microsoft all ended in suggesting a clean install, which I really didn't want to do just then. At that stage, in frustration, I came across a program (I can't remember the name of it!) on the internet that said it could fix my problems by replacing my corrupt files with theirs. It seemed a legitimate website and I checked it out quite thoroughly. Well, it worked initially. Then after a while, I began having the same problems. I was a bit over it by then, so I left it for a while. Sometime later, I tried to update IE which failed. So I started to look for fixes again......That's when I found Sysnative! (12months ago?) I ran SFCFix.exe and it fixed my Windows update problems, but not my IE update problems. I know I should have followed it up then, but I didn't. I use Firefox anyway. So now to the present. Windows updates work fine, but I still can't upgrade IE even with the latest installer downloaded from Microsoft (I also downloaded all the prerequisite updates, most of which were already installed). Now, I would like to upgrade to Windows 10, but I don't get the upgrade icon - apparently because I haven't got IE11 installed. My Windows installation is genuine (Windows 7 Ultimate OEM), but its pre service pack 1. I'm now quite prepared to do a clean install, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Can I do a clean install of windows 10, or do I try to fix my current Windows 7 problems and then upgrade. If I reinstall Windows 7 from my install disc, there will be many hours of update downloads. I'm not sure what to do. I've bought a 250gb SSD to transfer my system to once its all straightened out. So any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in anticipation> - David L (docoz)

PS I tried to paste the SFCFIX.Txt text into this post but Firefox crashes! Maybe its too big (8.24 MB). Can I upload the file using the large file uploader?

CBS.zip uploaded OK this time. My firewall was blocking it. Should I attempt to upload SFC.txt as a file attachment?

Hello and Welcome!

Try running the Windows 10 Upgrade manually here: Windows 10
Click 'Upgrade Now' and then run the program.

Be sure to choose the option to keep your settings, files, etc.

Thanks for the advice. Before attempting the upgrade I thought I would try and clean up my system a bit and get rid of some redundant programs. Well it seems things are in quite a mess, some programs uninstalled fine, but I have a few programs that won't uninstall at all! Some come up with "Error!! Product definitation file lost", others just keep running the uninstaller in a loop and at least one just doesn't do anything when I try to uninstall through "Programs and Features". I guess this indicates some severe damage, so should I still try the upgrade? (Would it fix this sort of problem?) I noticed on the link you gave me there's an option to create an install dvd. Should I start a fresh install? Unfortunately I have a few programs that I no longer have the installation discs for, 2 in particular I use regularly. They are quite old though - there are probably some better options out there now. Maybe it's time to just bite the bullet?

I would recommend to try the upgrade first, then sort out the applications that aren't working.

Thanks! I tried to upgrade twice. Both times failed with error 0xC1900101-0x40017. The second time i had all the peripherals unplugged. It could be a driver issue or even my motherboard's (GA-X58A-UD3R) compatibility. Not sure where to go from here. I downloaded the upgrade iso, as suggested by microsoft, so I'll try again after making sure I have the latest Bios version. If it still fails maybe I'll have to stick with my Win 7 Ultimate. Any help appreciated - Thanks again!

Hmm..

Try configuring your system for clean boot and then running setup again.

Clean Boot

Click the Start button, then type msconfig in the search box.
Click msconfig in the results list.
On the General tab, click the Selective startup option, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box.
On the Services tab of the System Configuration dialog box, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then tap or click Disable all.

WOW! I* thought this might fix it but still the same! Only peripheral plugged in is my Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard ( and the wireless connector) i,m about to give up and just try to do a clean install. I'm down to bare bones anyway! Not much left to uninstall. Only my old MS Office (2003 Ithink) could that be the problem? Time differemce is dragging this out, so i'll attach the C:\Windows.~bt\Sources\Panther\SetupAct.log again with this post. Ooops, No i wont - there is no attach icon!

Well I thought I'd try it all one more time. The upgrade failed in the second stage again, but when the pale blue screen came up to say "Something went wrong" (or similar) I noticed an error message that I hadn't seen before. This screen doesn't stay around for long so I had to be quick and noted down the message: "ATTEMPTED EXECUTE OF NOEXECUTE MEMORY 38416581.SYS. When the installer had restored my old system i searched for 38416581.SYS. I discovered it was a very old Kaspersky driver - I haven't had Kaspersky on my system for many years! There were about 8 drivers there, so I thought what the heck delete them. I started the upgrade again and ................ I now have windows 10 pro installed! Thank you so much for helping me through this ordeal! I would have given up a lot sooner, if not for your advice. At this stage everything is working fine, but I still have part of the problem though. A number of old apps are still listed in programs and features that won't uninstall and some that I uninstalled a long time ago but are still listed. Can you help me with this or do I need to look for advice elsewhere?

Uninstall Program Using FixIt

Please download and run the Microsoft Install / Uninstall Fix-It: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9779673
Accept the terms of use.
Select Detect problems and apply fixes for me from the dialog box when Fix It starts.
Select Uninstalling when prompted for the type of help you need.
Select the program you wish to uninstall from the list and click the Next button.

Let me know if that works :)

All good! Now I can install my SSD (Crucial MX200 250GB) and migrate my system to it. It came with Acronis 2015 free, so I'll give that a try for the migration. Any tips or advice? It shouldn't be too difficult - I hope. Meanwhile, Thank you again for all your help:smile9:
