[SOLVED] Windows update "looping" and not installing updates

Hi,

My Windows Update has been unable to download important important files and services while the system is using them. Basically, I tell Windows Update to restart now to install important updates and it restarts and still says it cant update while the system is using important files continuing the same loop. I've tried several fixes to troubleshoot the issue by scanning with a command prompt and manually restarting windows update.

Upon running the SFCFix tool and the CheckSUR tool I noticed some corrupt or missing files in the logs. I will post the SFCFix log, if you need the CheckSUR log too i can post that as well. I think my zipped CBS file is too large so if that is needed I can upload that as per the instructions. Thank you for the help.

Download and run the System Update Readiness Tool for your version of Windows here: System Update Readiness Tool

NOTE: If you aren't sure if your Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit, check here: How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system

This tool will take some time to complete - when it has finished, attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log with your reply.

Windows Update Package Replacement

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
A window will open showing the folder, Manifests
Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder

C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests
Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your next post please:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

I ran the readiness tool a first time but cut it short because it was unresponsive, but the log read that it fixed two errors after I quit out of it.

I ran it a second time and restarted the computer and now the log reads:

Please zip up and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
If the zip is larger than 8MB, upload the file to a file sharing service such as OneDrive, DropBox, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.

Please try running SFC to check for file corruption:

SFC Scan

Click on the Start

button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please zip and attach this to your next post.

Looks good.

Please try the following:

Run Windows Repairs

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...
Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.
Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

17 - Repair Windows Updates
Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.
Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

Here is the View attachment WindowsUpdate.zip Upon loading my computer today everything seems to be fine, hopefully the log says it is fine too. It said it needed to restart for important updates like usual but then, upon restart, it does not have that update block anymore :lol:

However, I do have an update to windows 10. I was curious if I need to update this as I would like to keep my Windows 7 OS. Can I download this update so it stops putting it as an important update and still opt out to upgrade? Or will downloading this change the OS automatically? Thank you very much for the help the past few days. I hope everything shows it is okay.

It is downloading updates, so that is very good!

That message in Windows Update about Windows 10 ("Upgrade to Windows 10" with the 'Get Started' button) will start the Windows 10 upgrade process, so if you want to keep Windows 7 that is definitely not what you want.

Awesome! Thank you for the help. I was able to change the registry to remove the windows 10 notification and app :grin1: However, I changed the registry to disable Windows OS Upgrade and I am still blocked to check for new updates because the Windows 10 Update is still queued up.

Would changing the registry have taken this out or am I too far along in the Windows 10 install process for this to be disabled? I want to be able to check and install new important updates without being blocked by this Windows 10 update barrier. I have a picture of the message attached.

Try turning Windows Update off, and then back on. This might reset the Windows 10 notification.

I ended up downloading the gwx control panel yesterday and cleared Windows Update cache with that as well as cleaning my computer of Windows 10 files. It looked to have worked but I was giving it a day and a couple restarts/update checks. But everything seems to be in order thank you for helping me through my issue. I would not have been able to do it myself :wave:
