[SOLVED] Unable to copy cloned old SSD to larger SSD or install Windows 10

Hi.
I cloned an almost full 128 GB SSD in an ASUS UX31 using Acronis True Image 2016. I installed a 512 GB Transcend SSD and attempted to copy back system image from a portable hard drive. I get the message: An internal error occurred - The system cannot find the specified file (0x800 70002). I get the same error message when I try to install Windows 10.

I ran sfc /scannow and also SFCFix. I cannot attach the CBS.zip file as when I try to upload it via the File Upload Manager it just continuously trys. The only corrupt file detected was:
CORRUPT: C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-i..lified-chinese-core_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_763763505e93084b\PINTLGB.

I have spent a fair amount of money on the new SSD/Acronis so I would be extremely grateful for any help you can give me in solving the problem.

Have you tried cloning the smaller ssd to the larger ssd using the 'as-is' option in Acronis?

Unfortunately there isn't an option for as-is in Acronis 2016. After having installed the larger SSD in the laptop and connecting the portable drive to it, the only option given (Windows 7 Pro) is Launch Startup Repair followed by System Recovery Options and then "Restore your computer using a system image that you created earlier". Instantly on clicking that you get the error message.

I assume the machine still boots with the other SSD?

If you put the small SSD back in the laptop and start to Windows, you can create bootable media following the instructions here: Acronis True Image 216: Creating Bootable Media | Knowledge Base

After you have the boot disc, you can then shut down the laptop, swap the SSD for the larger one, boot the Acronis disc and restore your image from the portable drive to the SSD.

I tried your suggestion but I couldn't get it to boot from an SD card despite trying all the usual boot sequences in Bios. Now have a more serious problem to sort out as no power despite having a full battery. Laptop is completely dead at the moment following connection to a portable CD/DVD writer.

Looks like that may be a known issue with that model of laptop. Have you updated the BIOS since it was purchased?

OK. Laptop now working again. Apparently unplugging the battery and using the power adaptor only, does a power recycle. I updated the Bios today. How about performing a factory reset then doing an upgrade to Windows 7 Pro again and then installing the large SSD and try copying the cloned SSD again? I'm not sure if I can copy the cloned Windows 7 Pro to the original Windows 7 Home Premium following a factory reset?

Do you have a spare flash drive or blank cd (and burner) to make bootable media for Acronis?

Acronis won't burn Bootable Rescue Media to a CD, but I do have a spare flash drive.

Try using your flash drive with the rescue media creator.

Once you have created the bootable recovery flash drive, shut down the laptop and install the larger SSD.
Next, attach your portable HDD that stores your backup and from boot from the usb flash drive into the Acronis recovery environment.
From here you should be able to restore your backup image from the portable hard drive to the SSD in the laptop.

Although I can now access the HDD using Acronis Recovery and can see all the files I have not been able to launch the recovery. I now keep getting the message "Error while opening archive file - This is not the last volume of backup drive" which I do not understand.

The backup archive must be split into multiple files. Can you take a screenshot of what you see in the file list and which file you are choosing?

Is this a 'files and folders' backup or a 'disks and partitions' backup?

It's a files and folders backup. I tried all the application files and always got the same error message I reported previously. Of course I had to reinstall the smaller SSD in order to get the sreenshots.

Assuming you would like to clone your existing smaller SSD to the new larger SSD, you would need to create a 'disk and partitions' backup to the portable drive.
When creating the backup, be sure to choose full backup and select the entire drive, not just one partition.

After your new full disk backup has been made, install the larger SSD, attach the portable drive, and then boot the Acronis recovery USB drive to restore the image to the SSD.

Using Acronis Bootable Rescue Media you don't have a choice. You can only write an ISO image file to the flash drive. I assume that if there were partitions these would be included. The subsequent bootable image file extension is .tib but nothing is displayed under that with the large ssd installed. Only under all files can you see those shown on the screen shots. By the way on another older laptop, also running Windows 7 Pro, I was able to download Windows 10 so does this suggest that the Windows 7 Pro on the Asus laptop is suspect?
