Windows Update Error 800F0831, Can't Install kb2976978

I've tried multiple times to install kb2976978 with no success. I'm receiving Error 800F0831 and run the troubleshooter which states that problems to the error have been fixed. I attempt to install kb2976978 and it fails. I have also tried rebooting. All other updates have installed successfully. Running Windows 8.1.

Will update thread with SFCFix.txt and CBS logfiles soon.

Hello Ericp and :welcome: to Sysnative! We will run DISM to get more information needed to fix this issue.

DISM Restore Health
1. Right-click on the Start

button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

Code:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.

Code:

copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

Download SFCFix (by niemiro) and move the executable on your Desktop
Download the attached View attachment SFCFix.zip and move the archive to your Desktop
Note: Make sure that the file is named SFCFix.zip, do not rename it.
Save any work you have open, and close every programs
Drag the SFCFix.zip archive file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it

SFCFix will launch, let it complete
Once done, a file will appear on your Desktop, called SFCFix.txt
Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply

I dragged the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe and released it. Command prompt showed the following:

Checking for updates....

Failed to check for updates. This may be due to an internet connection problem or a temporary availability failure of the update servers. Please ensure you are using the latest version of the program before continuing or exit now...

I'm connected to the internet and don't know what program it is referring nor how to check that I'm using the latest version of the program. So I exited.

Please delete SFCFix.exe and download the latest version of SFCFix here. Then, follow these instructions again:

From the update you are trying to install, are you trying to upgrade to Windows 10?

If so, there is a faster way, using the MediaCreationTool

[COLOR=9000]Upgrading to Windows 10 with MediaCreationTool[/COLOR]
Go to this page, and click Upgrade Now

It will download the Media Creation Tool.
Run the downloaded file
Choose Upgrade This PC
Click Next
Follow the instructions
When it asks you about keeping your files, Make sure to choose to keep everything

No I haven't tried installing Windows 10 and want to stick with Windows 8.1. It was just a random error that popped up and I though I should bring it to your attention in case it is related to the work you are doing for me.

So after uploading the COMPONENTS.zip file above for you to review, are we done or is there more you need to do?
