Multiple Windows Updates have failed to Install

    Good day,

I am having some issues with updates on a Windows 7 sp1 machine. I am the IT administrator for a small business with a little over 100 computers. I use a WSUS server to manage and do reporting on my Windows Computers.

I have a single computer that is having issues installing updates.

    • I ran the SFCFix.exe application and it reported no issues.
    • I have completed an SFC /scannow with no reported issues.
    • I renamed the SoftareDistribution folder in an attempt to reset the data store.
    • I downloaded and ran the Microsoft updater diagnostics. I has reported that it fixed the services but failed to fix previously failed updates. It seems every time I run it, it says it fixes the services. I am not sure if it actually needs to fix it every time or it just does it.
    • I have reinstalled .Net framework to see if that had anything to do with it.

Most of the updates fail with code 80246007 or 800F0826, but typically I have one that is 80070002.

I know that one of the updates I have had problems with is KB3071756 and it fails with 8007054F. I have tried installing this update manually with no luck. If I exclude this update and try to install other updates, it will fail on a different update.

I am at a loss of what to do and I am looking for some expert advice.

The machine is in production through the day, so I am limited on when I can work on the machine, but I will do my best to get any log files or supporting documentation needed.

I have attached the SFCfix log file I tried using the large file uploader for my CBS files, but not sure if I did it correctly. I was unable to see them as an attachable file.

    Thanks

Re: Multiple Windows Updates have failed to Install

Just for a little bit of an update.

I tried a few more things. I removed the WSUS settings and let it update against Microsoft Update server. I am still having similar issues.

What seems weird is that I have 12 .Net updates and if I try to install them it immediately says success, but when I check for updates again they pop back up. I don't know if it isn't installing them and saying success or if the updates are already installed and for some reason windows update thinks that they are not.

Re: Multiple Windows Updates have failed to Install

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Please manually download one of the updates that fails to install. Attempt to install it manually from the downloaded file. When it fails, please send me the following information.
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log (you will likely have to copy this to your desktop and then zip it up and attach)
    C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
KB number of the update you are trying to install

If any of the files are too large (~7MB is the Max) to attach to the forum, please upload to a service like SendSpace or DropBox and provide a link to download.

    Thank you.

KB3071756 installed 12/29 at roughly 10pm eastern time. the update installed correctly but needed to reboot. after rebooting it failed to configure updates and rolled back changes. the machine rebooted again and went through another rollback and then booted up.

Re: Multiple Windows Updates have failed to Install

Thanks for the information. Please start with the following.

    Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
    1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
    2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
    3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
    4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
    5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
    6. SFCFix will now process the script.
    7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
    8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Re: Multiple Windows Updates have failed to Install

Thanks. Please reboot when able and then attempt to install KB3071756 again from the manually downloaded file.

If it ultimately fails again, please provide me the two logs again (CBS.log and WindowsUpdate.log).

Re: Multiple Windows Updates have failed to Install

I will give it a shot this evening after production closes for the evening. If the update succeeds should I got ahead and try to install other updates?

Look if you have a service called nlsX86cc (Nalpeiron Licensing Service) runing. If yes, stop the service and try to install the update again.

Re: Multiple Windows Updates have failed to Install

I do not see a service by that name.

I apologize I forgot to reboot after the sfcfix script and reinstalling, should I try that step again?

Re: Multiple Windows Updates have failed to Install

I am waiting for the hotfix to check for updates. I have found that it takes 45-60 minutes to check for updates after a reboot and svchost.exe will use a steady 50% while scanning? not sure if that is relevant or not.

That may be relevant so thank you.

Re: Multiple Windows Updates have failed to Install

it took about 90 minutes for the hotfix to "scanning for updates on this computer".

after scanning, the hotfix still failed to install, the files are attached.

with the 50% svchost issue, I did run a malwarebytes scan that came back clean and used process explorer to verify that the windows update service was the service causing the cpu usage.

Can you get a Windows 7 with SP1 x86 DVD and do a repair install on the machine? No data/programs will be lost in the process.

Re: Multiple Windows Updates have failed to Install

I currently do not have a disk, but I am sure I could probably find one. The problem is the location is about 3 hours from me, I have been working on the computer remotely. The machine also has a preconfigured SQL express database from a vendor and I would be hesitant to do a repair install for fear that it would mess up the database or security.

Re: Multiple Windows Updates have failed to Install

Understood. In that case I would likely make a backup of the machine before I did a repair install. Let me see if I can come up with other options that you can do remotely. All the things I can currently think of may disconnect your session and I'm not sure you would get back in without a reboot.
