After a couple of hours waiting for the update to complete I ended up with the dreaded and now familiar modern host setup error. In agree this is hard one to resolve. I have successfully updated an older machine - a Dell laptop. Searching for ideas before I came across a post about incompatible msvcrt.dll files. The suggestion was to replace an incompatible msvcrt.dll with a successful one. Could I try using the version on the laptop on this difficult PC or would that risk problems? Anyway thanks again for your help. Rod

Step#1 - SFCFix Script Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Save any open documents and close all open windows. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it. SFCFix will now process the script. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please Attachments SFCScript.txt 22 bytes · Views: 2

Step#1 - Retrieve System Information 1. Download Speccy to your desktop. The setup file will be named spsetup126.exe or something similar. 2. Double-click on this file and install it. Note: Please ensure that you uncheck any foistware that may be presented during the install (i.e. Chrome Browser install). 3. When the program opens it will retrieve some information regarding your system. 4. Once it's done, select the File menu and choose Publish snapshot. Answer Yes to the confirmation message. 5. On the next screen that comes up, choose the Copy to Clipboard button and paste this link in your next reply.

Assuming uninstalling your AV still doesn't work, there are only a couple other options that I can recommend. The first would be for you to uninstall Service Pack 1 for Windows 7. Instructions at the link below. Once it's uninstalled, then try the update to Windows 10. How to uninstall Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

I'll uninstall SP1 and cross my fingers. If it doesn't work after that I'll call it a day I think. I'm going to look at a major upgrade and a fresh windows installation anyway

It seems to be going from bad to worse. I've uninstalled my AV and firewall and that's not the problem. Can't think what is happening as I can't get my system back to its Win 7 with SP1 state even

No data or programs will be lost in this process. Repair Install - Windows 7 Help Forums

It was about to restart when the message came that the update had failed. Ive decided to leave it at that and go back to Windows 7. I've begun reinstalling all updates and the AV as I'm running out of time and need to use the computer as is. I've decided it's time to upgrade the hardware so will start a new build after Christmas with Win 10 installed on an SSD. By the way, when I repaired with my Win 7 disk it wouldn't accept the ID. I had to phone up. Perhaps the problem is with my version being a student upgrade Win 7 disk. Thanks for your all help
