The following error code x80240020 refers to "ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION", which translates to the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. In order to fix this error message please follow the steps below:
- Please open up a command prompt Window as a administrator, instructions for Windows 7 or Windows 8 and 8.1.
- Inside the command prompt window enter in the following commands:
net stop wuauserv
ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download DL.bak
ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore DS.bak
net start wuauserv
wuaucault /updatenow
**Please note, your windows download history list will be reset when you run the above commands**
Wait a few minutes, once windows has advised all updates have installed you should hopefully have a message saying "Your upgrade to Windows 10 is ready".
If the above doesn't work follow the below steps:
- Open up a new Notepad file (Press the Windows Key button on your keyboard and the R button -> Type in Notepad -> Press Ok)
- Enter in the following text into the notepad file:

- Click on File -> Save, name the file win10fix.reg and in the dropdown box for 'Save as type' select All Files (*.*). Save the file on your desktop.
- Go to your desktop and double click on win10fix.reg, press Yes on any prompts.
- Restart your PC and try and upgrade again.
