[SOLVED] Help with corrupted file(s) I ALREADY RAN SFCFIX.EXE

Hello there and I am hoping one of you kind folks can help me. My WIN 7 SP1 is bugging me because I cannot use the disk clean manager to delete what is now about 9 GIGS of Windows Update Backups and Service Pack Backup Files.

I have been running SFC SCANNOW and CHKDSK and other things that I have been Googling. I came across the SFCFIX.EXE and decided to run it. It seems to show 1 CBS file that is corrupted. I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO JUST DO A REPAIR INSTALL but a) my Win 7 DVD is pre-SP1 and b) it is an OEM version that I bought from Newegg and it seems Microsoft doesn't allow one to download a SP1 installation repair ISO file using the activation code for OEM DVDs.

I have no idea if this is the reason that my cleanmgr isn't actually cleaning anything....but some other logs showed the following that would say my "COMPONENT STORE" is "CORRUPT"

I began looking at my laptop and it seems that according to Scannow and SURT, my laptop has a clean installation. So can I somehow copy a good version of the corrupted files above from my laptop over to my PC? Is there a way to make a full install disc from my laptop and use that to do a repair install on my PC or is it easier to target the few individual files since I only have 1 corrupted system file and 6 Component Store issues?

Sorry to keep replying to my own messages but I want to leave the most accurate info for whenever a helper might pick up this task.

1) I was able to FIX the first "corrupt system file" RASCHAP by finding same in the working copy on my Windows laptop and pasting it into the correct folder on my PC (after figuring out how to take ownership of that folder. NOW SFC SCANNOW HAS NO ERRORS! Yeah!

The SURT still comes up with now 4 missing payloads and 1 missing manifest. I looked in the WINSXS folder on my laptop and can't seem to see the exact same folder names. There are similar but some of the numbers don't match exactly. Not sure where to find these "payloads" and the "manifest". Will keep looking on my laptop, or if someone happens to pick up this request maybe they will have the access. I guess I could try someone else's hotfix file posted here and see if I can find just those few files (if they have the same ones corrupt or missing). Spending lots of time just to make my Windows install clean......

I found 2 of the payload files on my laptop. The other 2, and the 1 manifest, don't have folders with the exact same names on my laptop vs those cited in the errors below. BUT FOR EXAMPLE THE CONHOST.EXE file is the same size in all the different folders. Is it the same file, and just placed in a variety of folders? Can I take the CONHOST file from my laptop similar folder and place on my PC to remove the error? Same with the manifest?

What folder did you take ownership off? Who did you make the owner of the folder?

We can get those last three files repaired now.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
Download SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
Save any open documents and close all open windows.
On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
SFCFix will now process the script.
Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Can you please run SURT again and post a new CheckSur log?

THANK YOU so much for responding to me! I am hoping this works. I will try it once I get the kiddos to bed.

Re: your question, I just took ownership of the very specific folder (for example the "wow64_microsoft-windows-v..e-filters..blah blah....50f59ae" folder where I needed to paste the "psisrndr.ax" file). I made the "Administrators Group" (I think that's what it was called) the owner and then I permissioned them to have full access. I did not do a blanket ownership or permission on the whole WINSXS folder as I was just trying to rifle-shot the folder I needed to use. Not sure if that is the right way to do it or not.

Also I did not know how to switch back the permission to "SYSTEM ONLY" and also didn't know whether or not I needed to do so. It seems to still work, and the errors that I fixed myself no longer appear in the SURT.

Will report back once I load your fix. Thanks again

This windows corruption has been bugging me for literally years (I had issues downloading IE11 at one point last year and somehow then it worked but I've still been unable to do the Disk Cleanup/Removal of Old Windows Updates forever due to this corruption.

I really really appreciate this website and the willingness of a volunteer/stranger to help people like this. Microsoft would have gone round and round and never fixed this appropriately I'm sure. They would have just told me to do a clean install and I don't even have a SP1 CD, just an original Win 7 CD. This website rocks!

The SURT log looks good to me. One of your previous errors can sometimes be a corruption with the COMPONENTS hive, I want to make sure this is not the case.

SFC /SCANNOW

Click on the

button. Inside the search box type in CMD
Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with the rest of the steps.

Convert CBS.log to CBS.txt

Click on the

button => Inside the search box copy and paste the following command:

```
Press Enter
Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

I ran sfc scannow earlier tonight and everything was clean, it said it did not detect any abnormalities. I'm not at the PC now but will upload the CBS tomorrow.

Question: I assume you recommend that it is okay to to the disk cleanup and allow Windows to delete sp1 backup files as well as Windows update backup files? I'd like to recover 9 gigs of space that is being taken by all that junk. That is how I found my corruption in the first place when the disk cleanup never actually completed itself every time I would try it.

Note that the SFC /Scannow returns an "everything is fine" report HOWEVER this CBS.log has a lot of junk going on in the background....will let you decide if that is normal or not. Thank you very much.

Disk Cleanup says there is 7.2 GIGS that can be recovered by deleting "older versions of Windows Update files that are no longer needed", plus another 920 megs if I delete "Service Pack Backup files"

I guess even though I am anal and like things to be "clean" and not wasting hard drive space, the reality is now I have expanded my C: partition when I was running out of space originally so I have 100 gigs open. Maybe I am hearing you say that it is better to just leave all the old crap, just in case, rather than have Windows delete and clean it just so I can recover 8 gigs on a hard drive when storage is cheap. Is that the view? Just in case something needs to be fixed later?

This is just my take on it. In theory you should be able to do this fine, but I dont as I want to leave everything in place in case the files are needed for recovery.
