[SOLVED] [Win7] SFC Scannow Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service

Hi All
Found this forum by searching online for a solution to my problem.
Toshiba laptop windows 7 home premium 32bit is working really slowly and has multiple issues following non installation of a kodak aio driver file. Kodak spent hours with me today unable to find source of problem. .net 2.0.50727 at one stage.
Things tried to date.
Scanned pc with ESET and Superantispyware and it appears clean. There is definitely corruption in the system somewhere. I ran CCleaner to empty temp files and temp internet files. IE was working so slowly due to crappy plugins from junkware. Stopped the plugins and uninstalled them via control panel. Installed Firefox as it would be clean of plugins. Decided to do a system restore but to my horror there are no restore points except the one I did prior to looking for a restore point. DOH. Decided to try to run sfc /scannow from elevated command prompt, which gave the error in the title bar. Oh joy.

I have looked in the cbs.log as per other solutions found whilst ambling round the web. The log seems to be suggesting that it cant find the components hive amongst other things.
I have attached it in the hope that some kind person can help me through this mire. This is a customers laptop and I dont really have any fallback position except full reinstallation which I am trying to avoid.

Hello and welcome to Sysnative forums!

I've taken a look at your CBS log, and the problem may, unfortunately, be more complicated than first envisioned. Your CBS log has lots of the following error:

Code:

[HRESULT = 0x800703f8 - ERROR_REGISTRY_IO_FAILED]

This means that the COMPONENTS hive cannot be loaded due to a corruption. Whether this corruption is a big one or just one thing is yet to be seen.

Let's start by letting SFCFix scan the machine:

SFCFix AutoAnalysis

Download SFCFix.exe and save this to your Desktop.
Save any open documents and close all open windows.
Double click on SFCFix.exe to open it.
Follow all on screen instructions and upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please.

Can you please upload your COMPONENTS hive to me:

SFCFix COMPONETS Collection

Download SFCFix.exe using the following link and save the tool to your Desktop: [sfcfixdownload]Download SFCFix[/sfcfixdownload]
Download SFCFixScript.txt and save this to your Desktop as well: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u...eric/Collect/COMPONENTS/SFCFixScript.txt?dl=1
On your Desktop, you should now see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
SFCFix will now begin to upload your COMPONENTS hive to our server.

Thats what I did but I realise I posted the other file twice and then I saw your message, so I stopped the original instruction which was in the process of working. I bombed out of it and did it again as it seems it did not work, however when I tried it again it is now doing this

Hi,

Can you please browse to C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local and delete the niemiro folder, which stores the temporary data for SFCFix. Then try again.

Hello

Can you please go the following location C:\Windows\System32\config and look for the following files:
-COMPONENTS
-Any other files that start with the word COMPONENTS
-Or any files that have a similar name to COMPONENTS (it could be spelt different, have a number, a symbol etc)
If you find any please create a folder on your desktop and copy and paste all these files into this folder.
Next can you please zip this folder and upload them for me to analyze? The file may be too big to attach to this post, please use either Dropbox or One Drive.

I am trying to copy it over to desktop but it is taking forever and explorer froze again. I am just trying to apply the explorer hotfix from microsoft to see if I can get a better response from windows explorer. I will post when I have achieved the objective. Thank you for your help.

Great after waiting for 10 minutes for it to run it finally comes back with this update is not applicable for your computer. I will try another way.

There is no point in trying to install a hotfix from MS, as that will require access to the windows COMPONENTS hive, which Windows can not find/is corrupt.

Click on the

button. Inside the search box type in CMD
Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following commands
dir %systemroot%\System32\config >1&&notepad 1
Please post the contents of the notepad file back into this thread

I have put the file JJ.zip into dropbox above. I have a feeling it isnt complete but it is as much as it will do given the length of time it ran for. I think the permissions on the config folder are not right either.
