    Laptop taking a long time to restart and shut down

    Hi I have a Windows 8.1 Pro laptop:

    Laptop taking a long time to restart and shut down-pc-info-jpg

    Yesterday, it crashed and I could only close off all open apps/browsers and be met by an empty screen. I couldn't even open task manager so I forced shut it down (by holding the power button). When I switched it on, it wasn't performing very well either so I restarted it. It took a very long time.

    Later, when I shut it down for the night, it also took a long time so I went about doing my own thing for a while and ten minutes later it was still shutting down! I then proceeded to force shut it down again.

    I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post this but Event viewer> Windows Logs >System shows a few errors and warnings so if anyone could help that's be great! (I'm not sure how to put up my logs here so if you want to have a look, just let me know how i can do so)

    Re: Laptop taking a long time to restart and shut down

    Let's check your disk SMART stats.

    GSmartControl
    Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

    • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
    • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe; To extract you can right-click your mouse on the GSmartControl.zip file and select Extract.
    • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
    • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
    • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
    • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);

    hi i cant seem to run the program when i download it from that site either. I get the error "This app can't run on your PC. To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher."

    i will also note that, an attempt i tried before to download it alerted my symantec endpoint protection and it went into quarantine.

    This is clearly a FP detectiopn, alright, let's try another tool:
    http://hdtune.com/files/hdtune_255.exe

    Please go into Health Tab and take a screenshot of it. After that please go to Error Scan, uncheck the Quick Scan Option and let it run. When the test is done, be sure to take a screenshot and then attach the two screenshots to your next reply.

    That looks like an SSD. Is that the only drive in the laptop?

    Re: Laptop taking a long time to restart and shut down

    not sure if this is related but after playing a game for a while, quitting, then opening it up again, it doesn't seem to respond. the audio also stops functioning and sometimes i'm able to restore sound by going to task manager>services>windows audio and restarting it but it gets stuck on "stopping" and then my audio just goes haywire and my screen is stuck with this:

    Laptop taking a long time to restart and shut down-audio-jpg

    trying to watch videos on youtube also becomes a bit crazy as the video loads but doesn't play and at this point, as I can't watch any videos or fix the volume, the only way I can get everything back to normal is by restarting the laptop. after that, everything works fine again until after i play the game and quit it.

    That's very strange. Please reply to my previous question about the drive and follow these instructions to test the memory: Test RAM With Memtest86+

    Re: Laptop taking a long time to restart and shut down

    I'm wondering because of the small capacity. Yes, LiteOn is a company that makes SSDs, which is even more bizarre, because your system should be flying with an SSD. Please carry out Memtest86+, disregard the warranty stuff since you only have a single RAM stick, you can just let the test run.
    Make sure you leave it running for at least 8 passes or until errors appear.

    Adjust your BIOS to boot your PC from the USB drive in order to load Memtest86+. Save changes and reboot.

    Re: Laptop taking a long time to restart and shut down

    Let's try a different approach:

    Let's take a look at your start-up items with Sysinterals AutoRuns from Microsoft.

    Download AutoRuns from Microsoft TechNet - https://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe -- save to Desktop or Documents.

    RIGHT-click on autoruns.exe, select "Run as Administrator"

    Let AutoRuns scan the Registry (status will appear on bottom-left of AutoRuns screen)

    Save AutoRuns as an ARN (file extension) file - click on "File"; "Save"; Notice the ARN file ext is already filled in; save it to Documents or Desktop.

    Zip up the ARN file; attach it to your next post.

    Re: Laptop taking a long time to restart and shut down

    MetalDragon: to use the MemTest86+ USB key, you should probably restart your system and press F12 (key on your keyboard, many times right after the PC beep) to select what device you want to use to start your PC.
    Another option is to press and hold SHIFT (key on your keyboard) while you are clicking restart: it could present you the advanced menu (where you can choose the device to start your PC).
