Windows 8.1 - Computer freezes when external harddrive is connected

    Hello everyone,

I found this forum while trying to solve a problem which I discovered yesterday, whe plugging in an external harddrivo my Asus g750jx laptop (also called notebook) I have two external drives for the moment, and I have used them before on this computer, so it's nothing wrong with either of them. Since I haven't needed them for a while, I checked that there were nothing wrong with them on a HP Envy-7 laptop I have access to, and on that, they both showed up with no problem whatsoever.

Now, I noticed the issue, when plugging one of them in. Having the computer set to automatically open drives in the File Manager, and show its contents, I was a bit surprised when it didn't do this. The computer had detected the usb connection, and looking at connected devices. it does show there, and furthermore states that it is working properly. However, when I opened the File Manager, the computer lists the internal hardrive (split in two partitions C and D) and optical Blu-Ray player/CD/DVD-burner. It also showed the external drive, but with the generic Icon and not the specific one it uses to tell what harddrive it is, and of course the driver letter "F". When I clicked on this, the File Explorer greyed out and freezes. Trying to open any other program/app, results in the same, they too freeze on start-up. Using the Ctrl-alt-del to break this and be able to shut down the frozen program, it too ends up frozen. I had to shut down my laptop by preesing and holding the physical on switch. Yes, I know this is not a good way to do it, but nothing else would work since I tried to shut it off the correct way, but ending up with a BSOD and the computer never letting go of the working symbol, but obviously not doing anything.

After this, I checked for malware and spywarev with Spybot S&D, AdwCleaner and Advanced System Care Pro, in order to see whether there were some malwares etc blocking my computer. I then attempted connecting one of the drives again, with the same result. When I had rebooted again, I ran checkdisk in administrator mode, found some problems, which found some problems and reported that all of them but a few were fixed. I then went on with sfc /scannow, wich I have used before on other occassions. Well, this reported that there still was some errors and logged it to a CBS log. Having a look at this, it turned out that the only things marked as faulty was the one in this part of the forum. Therefore, when having found your forum, I ran the Dism command recommended here, following up with the SFC /scannow again. Both reportd that the errors were now repaired and everything was well with the system.

Thinking the problem finally solved. I exited to the desktop, and tried open the File Manager again, after plugging one of my external drives in. This time, it worked,(it showed the connected drive in the File Manager, but still not opening it automatically when connecting, and yes, I have checked my settings for that) but somehow I had managed to disconnect the battery, so the laptop reported that there was no battery available. I shut down the laptop, reconnected the battery and turned it on again...and the problem re-occurred. I thought it was due to the changed premises, alhough I had the power cord connected at both occasions. Therefore, I attempted Another run of both Dism and SFC to see whether that would solve the issue. It didn't. Both of them come up with no problems found.

Thinking that it still may be some malware or similar, I downloaded and ran Malware Antibytes AntiMalware since I have had good results with this program in the past. This just found a potential spyware, which was removed, and which couldn't have influenced my laptop in this manner. Just to be sure, I tried connecting one of the drives again, with the same result.

Currently, my computer works great as long as no external drive is connected. Both are of the same brand, WD Elements 1TB, and both of them is recognized by my computer when looking to devices connected in the lower right corner. However, one is not visible when opening the file Manager (just as the generic Icon for harddrives with the driver letter) but freezes when clicking on it. The other one will not show up at all in the file manager.

Oh, and I have also tried your SFC fix. It reports that the issue is repaired and that everything is ok, but still the problem remains.

I am running Win 8.1, upgraded from Win 8, and had this computer for some months, since April this year.

I'm quite used to tinkering with my computer, having had a few in the past, but so far, I find that Win 8 and 8.1 is the most fragile OS I've used so far. May be just a feeling, but it certainly seems that way to me.

Anyway, I'm happy to have found this forum and do hope you will be able to help me with this issue. If there is any further information you need, just let me know. please. I'll get back as soon as I can.

    Thanks in advance.

I know it's bad to reply to one's own reply if no one has. However, since there doesn't seem to be a way of editing or updating the post, I thought I would add that I have run a virus check with Norton 360 Premier Edition today, which found 30 files (most probably just cookies) and removed those.

Thanks for Reading my post and please comment in case you have some suggestions.

    Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Lets first take a look at the CBS logs.

    Export CBS folder

    1. Right click on the button
    2. Click on File Explorer
    3. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
    4. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
    5. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
    6. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
    7. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
    8. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
    9. Attach this to your next post please.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or One Drive

Re: Computer freezes when external harddrive is connected

    Hi Go To Power,

    Thanks for the welcome. =)

I have done some more things in order to try to fix my computer problem while waiting for an answer. Therefore, I ran a new dism test Before uploading it here.
The things I've attempted since my last post are, to inactivate the external drive in disk manager, formatted one of my drives, with the help of another computer running Win 8.1 too, the same OS as I have, loaded the contents agan and tried connecting it to my computer again, wih the same results.
Tried to disconnect and wait a while and then reconnect. Same result.
Tried uninstall a game "Battle for Middle-Earth" since I suspected that there may have been something with that which conflicts with other functions in the OS. I had to add a textfile to make it work on Win 8.1. The reason for this was because I previously have had problems with AdAware messing up the system with regards to browsers and flash content, which in turn locked the recovery options and a few other things as well.

Anyway, I have now followed the instructions you provided and attached the CBS file to the message:

    CBS.zip

Thanks for helping me =)Really want to solve this issue, since I have quite much use of the external drives, since using a laptop now, with smaller internal disk, and still have a lot of files I want to be able to use from my old computer (with OS XP), media files, documents etc. This has been working great until my new laptop decided not to recognize my external drives.

Hope I attached the file correctly, so that you will be able to open and take part of it. =)

Re: Computer freezes when external harddrive is connected

Hello and thanks for your quick reply,

I downloaded vew.exe from the link you included, ticked the options you advised me to, but when I clicked on run, I got the message: Viewer has not been coded in your language (Swedish). That's not strange, since I live in Sweden, but it's the first time that I haven't been able to run a program/app, because I haven't the correct language setting.

As I still wanted to run the program, I did a quick search on the net, and finding a person in Another forum who had experienced the same issue, I tried the piece of advice s/he got, that is to check the language settings on the computer. I did the same, changing my national settings from 'Sweden' to 'Great Britain' in order to have an English country. Didn't change the keyboard settings though. Still got the same results unfortunately when trying to run VEW. =( The only suggestion the program gives, is ' please contact the author'.

Any suggestions as to how to be able to run Vew, or is there some alternative I can do?

Thanks in advance and for your quick replies.

    Have a good day.

Re: Windows 8.1 - Computer freezes when external harddrive is connected

    Hello again, Go To Power,

Would never have thought of running this check myself, since it's not obvious how it's connected to my issue. I didn't know whether I would run it, with or without one of the hard drives connected, so plugged one of them in (the one that is visible in the usb connected devices,in the lower right corner of the screen), and also shows as a generic harddrive in the file manager. Didn't click it this time in order not to freeze the my computer.)

Anyway, I ran the test after marking the options you listed, and here is the result. The massive amount of 127.0.0.1 entries, is because I have spybot S&D installed and it automatically blocks a lot of malicious sites. Just mentioning it in case you wonder. Since I'm very interested in learning, what may this test tell, in regard to my issue?

    The result.txt list:

    Hello STJ :)

Can you please run MiniToolBox again and select the option List last 10 event viewer errors and list devices (tick All next to this option)

Has Sysnative forums helped you? Please consider a Donation to help the forum.

    Hi Go To Power,

Thanks for your fast replies. I ran the test again, and then realised that you would have a huge problem in understanding the log, since it was reported in Swedish. So, assuming you don't know my native language, I looked up how to change to English language and display language, and installed that before running the test again. This time it was understandable for you. Below is the text of the log.

    Code:

    **** End of log ****
As you can see there are some errors, but I don't know whether these have some impact on my problem.

When I had run the more ful test you asked for last time, I disconnected the harddrive again, so that it wouldn't interfere with anything. As it turns out, it obviously still does, although I had unplugged it. The connection symbol still showed at the lower right, and my mail client froze when I started it. This has happened before, but only when either of the harddrives has been connected. It seems like once you have tried to activate it or even only had it connected, some programs freeze, even if you unplug the drive before trying to access them. It's not possible to unlock them neither with ctrl+alt+del, nor by letting windows tryto find a solution to the problem. I've also tried using an unlocker in ASC, with the same result, that is, no luck.

Another thing I maybe should mention, but that showed long before this issue begun, is that when running Advanced System Care Pro 7 and let it defrag the register, everthing executes normally but for the last operation where it says BCD failed (or something similar, I haven't un it recently, so describing it from memory. I had this before, when not being able to use any type of restore, but it doesn't imterfere with any process as far as I know, and since some say it is not necessary in mot cases, I haven't bothered that much over it, unless it has impact on other things running on my computer.

Hope we'll be able to sort this out. Or maybe more correctly, you. I'm learning a lot though, thanks to you, and I really appreciate that you're helping me.

Take care, and have a great day.

Re: Windows 8.1 - Computer freezes when external harddrive is connected

    Hi STJ,

Thanks for providing that information. I have moved your thread to the Windows 8 section, as this certain issue with your external HDD is not one I am familiar with.

Re: Windows 8.1 - Computer freezes when external harddrive is connected

    Hello again, Go To Power,

Thanks for your help again, and for moving the thread to this location instead. Really hope I can get to the bottom with this and fix it, since I have files on those harddrives I do want to access with my new laptop. It's really strange as it worked great before. Since I haven't used them in a while though, I can't really tell when this issue occurred, but for when I discovered it.

Another strange thing is that my mp4 Cowon D2 player which you connect with usb as well, works perfectly, while my e-book reader (Bebook Neo) which runs Linux and worked without problems on my old computer (running XP) gets the message of having some error, an will not show up in the file managerI tried this in different ports and at some Points, regardless of which port is was, it would connect and be recognized, only to be disconnected after a Little while when trying to transfer a few files to it. Now, it has an extra storage SD card too, and when inserting this in my computer's card reader, this works faultlessly.
Therefore, it seems that some devices is all right, but not others when connecting via usb. Don't know why though.

Just thought I would mention this in case it has some impact on a possible fix or solution to my problem.

Oh, and as I said before, both of these harddrives shows up and work perfectly and as expected when connecting them to another computer. No problem at all.

Thanks in advance for any help in this matter. I really do appreciate all help I can get.

Re: Windows 8.1 - Computer freezes when external harddrive is connected

    Hello again, everyone,

Since I still haven't been able to solve my problem, I thought would update and let you know what has happened. This may be of help in finding the error and finally solving this. I got the idea to try and run the dism command in safe mode, and see whether it would correc something

However, before this, I ran Spybot &D to remove any malwares/spywares that may have sneaked in. The result was that besides cookies, there were also Somoto BetterInstaller, which probably followed with a free program I needed. Everything else was okay.
After this, I tried rebooting and switching to safe mode, knowing this strips away all unnecessary drivers and other things, and tried connecting my harddrives in this mode. This time, they both showed up under "My Computer" albeit without the specific icon the they ordinarily have. When clicking on this, both of them acted normally, and displayed their contents. In order to know if one or the other was having trouble, I tried them one at a time, instead of plugging both of them in. No problem, except for not showing automatically when connected, asking what should be done with them.

This tells me that there is nothing wrong with the drives, nor the ports, and since they both work in safe mode, there are most probably something with the higher level processes which are messing things up. Granted, I don't know for sure, just thinking out loud here.

I then continued by running the dism command again, still in safe mode, since I thought it may Catch some error formerly disguised, locked or hidden, while the system runs normally. It reported that there were some corruptions that it had fixed.

After this, I proceeded with rebooting, but leaving one harddrive plugged in, since I wanted to see if the problem was finally fixed. Unfortunately it wasn't, so I'm still stuck at the same issue, besides now knowing that both harddrives are accessible in safe mode.

Sure hoping that someone will be able to help me...

    Have a nice weekend.

Re: Windows 8.1 - Computer freezes when external harddrive is connected

    Hello everyone once again,

I now think I've found out what the problem is, but when trying to correct this, I ran into Another issue, which seems to be a bug in Windows. Hopefully someone here can help me sorting it out.

All right, I found out that most likely my computer has decreased the Power output to the USB3 ports on my computer. My hard drives works either with USB 2 or 3, and other devices I've tried connecting to my computer in order to see whether there is something wrong with the ports, have all worked as expected.
Elsewhere on the net, Another user had tried using a usb-hub with 2.0 ports, and this worked. However, I haven't been able to try this, since I don't have a hub. Looking deeper into the issue, it turns out that both that user's an mine are stuck in selective mode at startup and not normal mode. When trying to change this, it automatically reverts back to selective start, with one of the options (the last one) greyed out.

In order to fix this. I have ticked "Normal startup" and confirm, then "Ok", rebooted the computer and checked msconfig again. Same thing, it was still in "Selective mode".

I went on by restarting in Safe Mode and did the same change again, and then restartedd as normal. Same thing, when checking the computer is still in "Selective Mode".

I then attempted to run msconfig and unchecked all the services, clicked confirm, and ok, looked back to see whether there was any change to the startup option. There wasn't.

I continued with marking all of the services again, confirmed and OK...restarted. Same thing again..."Selective start."

I do believe that this may very well be what is causing my issue, somehow blocking enough Power to run the port at usb 3 level and therefore not showing my hard drives as meant to.

Hope there is someone here who knows how to fix this.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi STJ ^_^,

Could you please follow the instructions over here and post back with the output?
    http://www.sysnative.com/forums/bsod...ows-vista.html

Let's see if I could find something in the reports :)

Also, may I ask which Antivirus are you using? Is it set to automatically scan the Hard Disks when plugged in?

Did you try formatting the Hard Disk (Not the Quick Format)? Are you still having the issue after formatting the hard disk?
