    I'll admit to not reading the whole thread, but sounds like a bad hard drive to me. Any NTFS or disk errors in Event Viewer? Have you run a utility like HDTune or the HP diagnostics at boot up?

    No HDD errors found in event logs.

    HDD was replaced in June 2010 & has passed SeaTools for DOS LONG test several times.

    This phenomenon has not [yet] recurred since 25 April 2012.

    Re: System shuts down every ~15 min

    Hello John! How's it going? Hot where you're driving at?

    I read the entire thread a few times, that's a tough (and annoying) problem you got there.

    The problem occurs every 2 months or so, that indicates it's not necessarily a software (definitely not hardware) problem, as James6769 mentioned, but rather a personal habit/thing you do on 23/24 every 2 months. Is there anything that needs to get done in your personal life on those days? For instance, you might pay bills online and use a particular program to do so. This could narrow us down a few suspects.

    Task Scheduler is unreliable, it feels like sometimes. Try http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...=vs.85%29.aspx to get lots of information that might help us. Here's a neat program you'll appreciate, it's really useful:

    Download Sciptomatic HERE: http://computerperformance.co.uk/vbs...riptomatic.htm and when you open it select "Root\CIMV2" under WMI Namespaces and then select "Win32_ScheduledJob" under WMI Class. Then just click 'Run". Please cut copy and paste the output when you select "Plain text".

    Lemme know what you get,
    Take is easy.

    Re: System shuts down every ~15 min

    A CMD screen opens, then shows:

    Code:
    ==========================================
    Computer: PC1
    ==========================================

    C:\Users\PalmDesert\Documents\wmi\batch>
    No other output.

    Per MSDN:

    Win32_ScheduledJob class.

    Note that this class can only return jobs that are created using either a script or AT.exe. It cannot return information about jobs that are either created by or modified by the Scheduled Task wizard.

    Re: System shuts down every ~15 min

    These strange crashes have reappeared once again - this time on 2 different systems here.

    1. The HP laptop - subject of this thread
    2. A Gateway E6100 desktop

    I believe them to be the same type of crash because of the rarely seen error message - something like "Windows OS must now close" - like the error message "Explorer must now close", which we all have seen.

    The symptoms are the same - complete loss of "clicking ability", yet the mouse can be moved around the screen.

    Both systems had HDDs pulled; HDD in HP laptop now replaced & Windows 7 x64 installed onto it.

    The Gateway - need to either get another IDE HDD & install Windows 7 or use the current HDD.

    I'd like to save the files from each drive first to see if any clues can be obtained (EVTX, IE Cache, TEMP, etc..). I managed to get dumps (created via TaskManager) of several processes that seemed to be spiking or otherwise "odd".

    I really would like to get the server HTTP logs to look at the traffic at the time of each incident to look at the line item statements (GET, PUT, etc...) to see if similarities exist.

    For now, until the files are retrieved from the HDDs, there is little to do.

    If so it has Sata ports you can use a Sata drive.

    Are both systems running ESET? Any other similarities?

    I've noticed with other antivirus software that bugs like these can occur infrequently but be a bit of a nuisance. Not sure if that is the case here, but it may be worth investigating if both systems have the same software installed.

    It may be a SATA HDD now - I'll have to check. I assumed it to be IDE because the system was built ~2003/4 & came with XP Pro.

    I believe ESET was on both, but different versions. NOD32 only - not ESS (which is NOD32 + ESS Firewall).

    Re: System shuts down every ~15 min

    This is utterly bizarre, 2 machines crashing with the same error...

    Could you snap a photo of the error next time it appears?

    I have seen this kind of error before. Something along the lines of "windows must now restart because xyz terminated unexpectedly". I managed to cause that by playing around in a VM and stopping processes until Windows crashed.

    Any other similarities between the two machines?

    What OS is the Gateway running? Windows 7?

    Pictures would be a great idea in this case; however the screen on my only camera is broken (screen cracked since 2007), so no guarantee as to outcome.

    I got a 'new' phone today - a Samsung SII to replace my Nokia 6303 Classic.
    Installed Samsung Kies into my Laptop for backup/transfer.... and it crashes if I attempt to open the full app, but the 'Lite' version works fine (same installer)
    <grrrr>
    ...and 20 mins into the data upload from the old phone, I got a SMS from the provider telling me they were upgrading me to MMS and Web access on PAYG (I've only been trying to get web access for the past 3 years)
    <grrrr> <grrrr>

    ...and people wonder why I can't see the point of smartphones?

    No smartphone here. I'm not much for telephone calls except to family and certainly don't need to check in when I go to the grocery store.

    The only reason I have this one is that my new boss (start a part-time job on Monday) wants me to be able to phone/email him (and incidentally to learn the foibles so I can teach him how to use his phone )
    My old 6303 worked fine for what I need it for - phoning people, and the occasional text message.
