The problem isn't updating, the problem IS an update. As usual, the problem is caused by a bad MS update. They've been intentionally trying to cripple Win 7 & 8 users to force them into Win 1o. They need to please their investors who were promised lots of users for their telemetry ad and spy oriented OS.
KB2868038 is the culprit, or at least was. Who knows what else they're putting out there. Uninstall it and see if that helps. If it not, download process hacker and disable usbport.sys and atapi drivers. If you already use 10 then all I can say is get ready for more of the same. Personally, I would get rid of 10, but that's just me.
