Restore Windows 7 Image using Macrium Reflect

Hello Aura,

I went to c:\windows\system32\mmc and right clicked on MMC and Microsoft Management Console opened. Then I clicked on the tab File and a menu appeared with the option to Add or Remove Snap-in. This option was not available in the configuration of MMC on my notebook. :smile9:

Then I clicked on Local Users & Groups > Add. It told me, "This computer is running Windows 7 Home Premium. This snap-in may not be used with this version of Windows."

Should I remove Home Premium from my new SSD drive? I have Windows 7 Professional on my old drive that is in my draw.

I think so, but that's not the only change I might need to make to this notebook inorder to use it as a platform to stage web conferences. I would like to install the software needed and then investiage how best to send images to a wall screen.

Well at this point, I think you should start a new thread in the Windows 7 section and asks your questions there, since we're no more dealing with Windows Update issues :)

Reinstalling Windows 7 is a piece of cake if you ask me. All you need to do it boot from the installation media, clean the partition on which you want to install Windows and launch the install. Afterwards, install your Windows Updates, drivers and you're ready to go.

I don't have an installation CD for the operating system, nor do I have an image file of the system partition on the old SATA drive. I could externally connect the old drive to my notebook and use Macrium to make an image file of it's system partition, store the image file on my USB hard drive.

I should be able to:

wipe my SSD with the cleaning tool in CCleaner
boot the notebook from a rescue USB flash drive and load Windows Preinstallation Environment 5
load Macrium Reflect v6
connect my USB hard drive where the backup file is stored
install the image file on the new SSD

What aout drivers needed by the SSD?

You can download the drivers needed by the SSD directly from the manufacturer website, or your laptop/motherboard manufacturer website (the Disk Controller drivers).

Attached the SATA drive to notebook with StarTech USB SATA adapter. The computer recognized and showed the drive as a storage device. Attached USB hard drive where I store my backups to computer and the computer recognized it. Then I ran Macrium Reflectb and Macrium saw both devices but the backup aborted. Don't know why the backup failed. I checked Services and VSS had started. Yesterdat I used Macrium Reflect on the notebook to backup. I tried the idential procedure on one of my desktops and it failed there to.

I used Acronis Disk Director and found there were three partitions on the drive. I deleted the partrions and formated the drive to NTFS. Then I repeated the Macrium Reflect Restore process and this time the error message from Macrium didn't appear. :lolg:

Next I tried to boot the system from the new drive where I restored the OS. I connected the drive to the notebook with a StarTech USB adapter; pressed Start button and the F9 key to get to the Boot Menu. On the Boot Meu the hard drive where I restored the system did not show-up. I continued to start the notebook from the internal hard drive, after the system booted the new drive appeared in Windows Explorer. I opened it and all the software seemed to be installed. I wonder why the drive did not appear as a boot option. Can you determine if a drive is bootable by going to MSC Storage Devices ? :huh:

Yes you can. The drive needs to be marked as "Active" in order to be able to be booted from.
