Contacted HP, and they said I have to buy a new license! Called Microsoft and they said the same thing! I thought you could replace hardware items and then go through a process to get activated again. HELP!!!! Click to expand... As Wrench noted, with an OEM license (which the vast majority are), you can replace everything in a computer and not require a new license - except the motherboard. A new motherboard is considered a new computer, thus requires a new license. The ONLY exception is when the motherboard is replaced with an exact replacement as part of a repair action because the first board failed. Note this information is in the EULA which we all agree to when we decide to keep using the computer after the first boot up.

So you need to buy a new copy of Windows for the new computer you created when you changed motherboards. Your only other legal option is to install Linux.

Give them a call and explain that it is an exact replacement as part of a repair action. It has been awhile since I had to do this, but in the 5 or 6 times I did, it was never a problem and did not take very long (once I finally got to talk to a human).
