Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

Open msconfig (from start - run, or a simple command prompt or an elevated one, I think it's the same in all cases) and make screenshots of general and boot tabs:
    Read More:
Open notepad, paste the following text in it, save it as SRLogs.bat (or the name you prefer).
    Read More:
Right-click the new file, click run as administrator.
This file only collects information, it won't modify anything on your machine.
After the command completes, you should see on your desktop three new files: SRLogs.txt, Services.ps1, EventSystem.reg.
Right-click on Services.ps1, click run with powershell.
After the command completes, you should see on your desktop a new file: services.txt.

Zip .txt and .reg files and the screenshots up, then send the zipped file here.

Btw I'd appreciate someone addressing the questions I asked in my last few posts.

    Thanks

Wanted to mention when I ran the powershell it gave me a prompt saying this was going to change policy, are you sure you want to do this, and I hit "yes".

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

Currently running tweaking.com but couldn’t run it in safe mode due to the “bitlocker filed are missing or corrupt” error message. I don’t expect this to work.
    Is this a new error?

Is repair install going to work given my issues?
I think I had your same bitlocker error (when I had Win8/8.1), after I modified my partitions sizes.
I remember I couldn't even use refresh and reset.
I can't remember if you took your precautions (backups and system image), therefore my advice right now is to take them.

Why is sfcfix not an option to give me the clean files to replace the corrupt or missing ones?
It could be you don't have corrupt or missing files, monitored by SFC (i.e., Windows Resource Protection).

Tweaking.com did not solve my issue. Would you like to see the logs?
Uhm, no... I don't think they're relevant if they show they worked.

I went back and checked the registry tweak you suggested. There are 12 subkeys under the volume key that I was unable to change service from "volume" to "volsnap". For what it's worth I am now able to change one of them, the 2nd subkey of the 12.
I don't know. This should be replied by SoftwareManiac.

I looked at my running processes and there is nothing that looks out of place. What is the likelihood that this is a case of missing files rather than corrupt files?
    I don't know.

The comsysapp (COM+ System Application) is set to manual on my system.
    Yours is set to automatic.

Your [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EventSystem] is equal to mine.

Compared with my windows services, you haven't got these ones (it could be because you are using W10 Anniv.Upd and I Win10 Crea.Upd):
    Browser - Computer Browser
    DevicesFlowUserSvc_4592b
    DusmSvc - Data Usage
    Fax
IpxlatCfgSvc - IP Translation Configuration Service
    NaturalAuthentication
SecurityHealthService - Windows Defender Security Centre Service
SEMgrSvc - Payments and NFC/SE Manager
    spectrum - Windows Perception Service
    TokenBroker
WFDSConMgrSvc - Wi-Fi Direct Services Connection Manager Service
    wlpasvc - LPA Service
    workfolderssvc - Work Folders
    xbgm - Xbox Game Monitoring
XboxGipSvc - Xbox Accessory Management Service

You could also try to run the following commands (in bold), especially the second one (vssadmin).
You can see my active volumes blue-coloured.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

    @xilolee: Thank you.

Is this a new error? I noticed it a few days ago around the time of my first post here about my issue.
therefore my advice right now is to take them. You're correct, I tried resetting and it failed. As I said, using the Windows 10 Backup function failed, so I backed up my main files yesterday. I didn't try saving a system image but I'll do that (if I'm able).

I was never offered Creator's update. No idea why.

I'll try running the commands you listed but I don't understand why you put yours in blue - should I substitute mine for yours? Can you clarify?

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

I apologize for not being responsive. I was and still am extremely busy.

For our tools, like SFCFix, a corruption would have to be identified by a tool like SFC, then we could provide you with replacement files.

As xilolee mentioned, I don't think any were identified (Am I right?)

    I don't need your Tweaking.com logs.

I would like to know what exactly have you done BEFORE being able to modify the 2nd key as you say. Also, what happens now if you try to modify the rest of them as per my instructions?

Please do the following and attach dism.log and CBS.log

    Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

    1. Right-click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
    2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
      Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
      copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
    4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

You can try aomei backupper standard (click) (it's free to download and to use) to:
    • Create either the aomei bootable CD (try first a rewritable cd, not a recordable one) or the aomei bootable "usb drive", to start windows when there are problems.
This media has to be tested as soon as it is ready to use.
I usually use aomei backupper inside windows and I had to use the bootable media just one time.
If this shouldn't work, you should try another similar software.
    • Create a full system image right after it.

    Nor do I.
I searched and downloaded AU and CU directly on Microsoft website.

I put mine in blue to make it clear those values should be different on all other machines.
    Therefore they shouldn't be copied!

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

    [QUOTE=softwaremaniac;195050]

As xilolee mentioned, I don't think any were identified (Am I right?) Correct

I would like to know what exactly have you done BEFORE being able to modify the 2nd key as you say. Also, what happens now if you try to modify the rest of them as per my instructions? Ran tweaking.com options register system files and repair volume shadow copy service per xilolee's suggestions; also ran options for repair component store and repair safe mode. Still getting "there was an unexpected error in the property page; System Restore encountered an error. Please try to run System Restore again" (0x81000203) when I try to configure SR and, when trying to modify the keys, "Cannot edit Service: Error writing the value's new contents".

I will follow up later with the DISM and CBS logs. Just a side note, xilolee's directions with the registry tweaks are getting over my head so I'm going to skip those for now. Adding to my confusion is getting directions from two different people although I do appreciate both of your insight.

    Thanks

Would it be helpful if I tried to manually install the Creators Update? I was never offered it via Windows Update.

Thanks but I’m not interested in that right now. All I had in mind was manually installing the update that WU should have automatically offered months ago in the hopes it would include files I may currently be missing.

Re: [Win10v1607b14393 x64] System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

    I'm fixed. I think.

Installing the Creators Update seems to have worked. I can now create new system restore points, no errors when I click on "Configure System Restore", no errors when trying to boot into safe mode, and can shut my computer down via the shutdown function.

Ran SFC /Scannow and no corruption found.

Do you feel there is any other troubleshooting needed at this point just to be safe? Anything I should check on to make sure it works?
